NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY🐾
Thank you to everyone who sent in these purrfect pics! Here at Parkvets we love black cats, if you are considering welcoming a feline friend into your home, we would thoroughly recommend one!
Here are some fun facts about black cats:
🐾Black cat fur can change to a reddish-brown colour, sometimes called "rusting," which can be due to sun exposure- similar to when humans' hair lightens in the sun!
🐾The gene for black fur is linked to a stronger immune system, which helps them resist certain diseases like FIV.
🐾It’s Rare To Find an all-black cat! While some cats are completely black from head to toe, this is actually uncommon. Most black cats have patches of fur, paw pads, or whiskers that are another colour, such as white.
🐾Studies have found that black cats are less likely to be adopted 😢. This may be because black cats have long been tied to superstition, as symbols of bad luck or witchcraft. The connection between black cats and witches’ evil deeds is famously tied to the Salem witch trials of the 1690s.
🐾Black cats are NOT bad luck! There is a superstition that black cats were associated with the occult, which started around the Middle Ages, and many black cats fell victim to this misconception. Many believe that this led to a decrease in the cat population as they were associated with the spread of the plague in the early 14th century. However, the disease was actually carried by rodents!
🐾No one knows exactly when black cats got their bad rap, but a black cat crossing your path certainly won’t bring you bad luck. In fact, inviting one into your life has direct benefits, like improving mental health.
