This handsome boy is Kasper😍. He has been in with us today to have a dental as he has very smelly breath, with tartar build up which is causing his gums to be red and sore. Here he is posing with nurse Lauren before his procedure. He’s such a good boy and will be summer smile ready! 🦷

Is your dog boisterous or over friendly?

Your dog might be friendly, but often their company is not wanted by other dogs and owners.

Here are a few top tips:

▶️Have excellent recall or get them on lead when you see dogs approaching until you know if these dogs are happy to play

▶️Do not let your dogs run up to on lead dogs

▶️If they are getting too boisterous they may accidentally harm other dogs, recall and get them calmer before proceeding

▶️Find other like minded dogs and owners and arrange fun play sessions at quiet areas or in rented dog fields where they can burn off that energy safely!

⚠️ Be aware of blue-green algae ⚠️
With the hot, sunny weather fast approaching, it's possible for your local streams, lakes, rivers, estuaries and sea to be contaminated with blue-green algae.

Many blue-green algae contain, or make, a number of different toxins. These toxins are often harmful to dogs, and can even be deadly. Dogs are most commonly exposed when swimming, playing in, or drinking from contaminated water. Dogs may lick the contaminated water from their fur and can be poisoned this way.

If you come across a body of water that you think may contain blue-green algae, do not go in it yourself, or let your dog swim in it or drink from it.

We are aware of a few videos circulating social media at the moment regarding ibuprofen ingestion in dogs.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is commonly used in people for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with aches and pains, headache, cramps and for the relief of mild fever.

Ibuprofen is a very widely available over-the-counter painkiller. Although well tolerated in people, dogs are very sensitive to ibuprofen and ingestion of even a relatively low dose can cause adverse effects on the gut and the kidneys. A very large overdose can even cause very rapid onset features including convulsions.

☎️Owners can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 if they are concerned about their pet.

We do not recommend the administration of any human medications without prior consultation with your veterinary surgeon.

Did you know that Antibiotic resistance is the biggest threat to human health? A study has shown that it’s the leading cause of death worldwide and is killing about 3500 people every day!
There have been no new antibiotics discovered since the 60’s, and some health issues are so resistant now that some antibiotics are strictly reserved for use in human health only.
At the Ark, along with other veterinary practices, and human health organisations, we are committed to reducing usage to help minimise the risk.
Remember that unless told to do so by your veterinary team you should always finish your pets antibiotic course right until the end.
Never share antibiotics with other pets.
Please help us too by bringing back unused antimicrobials or any other medication to the practice for disposal.
