Oak Vets Hydrotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre

Oak Vets Hydrotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre A veterinary-led aquatic treadmill for hydrotherapy. Starting a pet hydrotherapy centre in Pembrokeshire has been a labour of love over the last few years.

A comprehensive and caring small animal rehabilitation service in the heart of Pembrokeshire, offering hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, laser therapy, acupuncture and much more

To find out more, please get in touch with our team who would be happy to help From going away to receive suitable training, to finding a premises and the right treadmill for our patients - but in February 2018 it all came tog

ether. Aquatic treadmill therapy has so many benefits for our four legged patients - improving muscle tone, improving joint function, assisting with pain relief and much more. It's particularly useful for those patients suffering with arthritis, or starting to 'go off their legs', but is equally beneficial for toning and conditioning athletic/working dogs, or as part of a weight management programme.

🚫🎾 Think Before You Throw! 🐶‼️

Did you know that repeatedly throwing balls or toys for your dog can actually harm their joints and muscles over time?!

While fetch seems fun and a lot of our pets love to play, those sudden stops, sharp turns, and explosive sprints can lead to:

⚠️ Torn ligaments (like ACL injuries)

⚠️ Muscle strains & spinal stress

⚠️ Long-term joint damage, especially in growing puppies or senior dogs

Your pup might be eager to chase, but their bodies are NOT built for high-impact, repetitive motion—especially on hard surfaces.

✅ Try safer play options like:

🔄 Tug games

👃Scent work or enrichment games

🚶‍♂️ Steady walks and gentle hikes

Let’s protect our dogs’ musculoskeletal health so they can play for years to come! 💚🐾

🐾 Did You Know Dogs Don’t Have Collar Bones?! 🦴

Unlike us, dogs don’t have a collarbone connecting their front legs to their skeleton...

🐾💪 Instead, their front legs are held in place by what is referred to as the shoulder girdle, or thoracic sling - made up of the scapula (shoulder blade) and a strong group of muscles, tendons and ligaments

Think of it like a muscular hammock that supports the chest and shoulders, suspending the dog’s axial skeleton (spine, ribs, and sternum) between the front legs🐕

Why is this important?
Because these muscles:
✔️ Support the front half of your dog’s body
✔️ Help absorb shock when they run, jump, or play
✔️ Keep their movement smooth and balanced

If these muscles get weak, tight, or sore, your dog might:
❌ Have poor posture (chest closer to the ground)
❌ Seem stiff or slow to get up
❌ Show signs of discomfort or even lameness

💡 Keeping these soft tissues strong and healthy can help your dog stay active, comfortable, and happy

Gorgeous Ra is another recent starter at the rehab centre🐾She sees us for hydrotherapy to strengthen and build muscle and maintain joint range of motion, particularly in her back legs 💦

She also has laser therapy, massage, and stretch to work on some discomfort she has been having in her back - which has been feeling much better in recent sessions!🩹💚

Ra is an active girl who loves to keep busy with her owner, so we've added more exercises recently that they can work on together in between sessions, to keep progressing her further along her rehab journey 🫶

How gorgeous is Luna?!!! 😍

We have lots of new rehab starters this month, and lovely Luna is one of them 💚🥰She had her initial assessment yesterday with our Physiotherapist Maddie for an ongoing problem with her knees 🦴🩹

She was initially a little nervous, but after lots of encouragement ended up loving the water treadmill and totally coming out of her shell 💦💙

We'll always work with your dog at THEIR pace, using fear-free methods to make their rehab sessions a positive experience 🫶 It's always a pleasure to see your pets grow in confidence through sessions, and even enjoy what once made them feel unsure 💚🐾

Lovely Daisy had her first session in the water treadmill this afternoon, and completed it as if she'd been doing it for years!!💦

She reports that there are VERY special treasures in the rehab room toy basket for afterwards, and didn't want to let go of this one 🤣😍

See you next week Daisy 💪🐾💙

Important post about home adaptations for pets, safe environment = increased protection for joints!!

Myth: “Home adaptations like ramps and rugs are only necessary for senior or sedentary dogs - athletic dogs don’t need them.”

✅ Fact: Even athletic dogs benefit greatly from thoughtful home adaptations. In fact, their drive to stay active can put them at higher risk of injury on slippery floors, stairs, or during high-impact landings without support.

🏠 Why this matters: Caregivers of high-drive or working dogs can often overlook environmental changes, assuming their dog’s strength compensates for joint issues. But reducing slip risk, impact stress, and awkward movements with things like non-slip runners, stair gates, and well-placed ramps can preserve mobility and performance long-term.

🐾 10 Vet Rehab Myths — BUSTED! 🐕‍🦺✨

❌ Myth 1: “My pet is limping but doesn’t seem to be in pain"

👉REALITY: While some gait change can* be mechanical or non-painful, when our pets offload a leg or change the way they move it is often because there IS discomfort. Because signs of pain are not always obvious e.g. whining, extreme behaviour changes, loss of appetite etc, many owners can miss signs of hidden pain or mobility issues that physiotherapy can address early on.

❌ Myth 2: “My dog will just rest and heal on their own, no need for physio.”

👉 REALITY: People often believe rest alone is enough, but too much rest can cause muscle loss and stiffness without proper rehab input

❌ Myth 3: “My pet is too old or too fragile for physiotherapy.”

👉 REALITY: Owners worry physio might be too hard or stressful for senior or sick pets, when it most often actually vastly improves their quality of life.

❌ Myth 4: “I can just watch videos and do physio or hydro at home.”

👉 REALITY: DIY rehab without professional guidance risks incorrect techniques or worsening injury. A trained vet physio assesses your pet’s unique condition and customises SAFE, effective treatment plans.

❌ Myth 5: Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are only for dogs

👉 REALITY: There’s a common misconception that rehab is dog-only, but cats and other animals can benefit too!

❌ Myth 6: “It’s too expensive and not worth it.”

👉 REALITY: Cost can be a big concern, and some owners don’t see the immediate benefit, but long-term rehab often saves money by preventing more serious problems.

❌ Myth 7: “Physiotherapy is a luxury—pets don’t really need it.”

👉 REALITY: Vet physio is medical treatment, NOT luxury. It’s proven to reduce pain, improve joint function, and enhance/speed up recovery

❌ Myth 8: “Only injured or post-surgery pets benefit from physiotherapy.”

👉 REALITY: Physiotherapy helps prevent injuries, improve muscle tone, and maintain mobility in healthy pets, too! It’s especially important for seniors and active animals to stay strong and pain-free.

❌ MYTH 9: “My pet is just getting old, stiffness is normal”

👉 REALITY: While stiffness is common as our pets age, conditions like arthritis are painful, and older pets often benefit the most from physio - there is great scope to improve their quality of life.

❌ Myth 10: “Physiotherapy is only for recovery after injury or surgery.”

👉 REALITY: While physio is crucial for recovery, it’s also highly effective as a preventative measure and for managing chronic conditions.

💡 The takeaway: Trust evidence-based veterinary physiotherapy—your furry friend deserves expert care 🐾️

Handsome pup Bailey was feeling super relaxed and cosy after his hydrotherapy session today🐾💦 He sat really well for his massage too afterwards - though that probably had something to do with his paw-rents bringing in his absolute favourite snacks to the session... 👀😂

Weight management is SUCH a vital part of arthritis management. If you are struggling to keep your dog at a healthy weight, especially as they become less active, ask your rehab therapist for support 💚🐾

Myth:
“My dog is active, so a little extra weight won’t harm their joints.”

Fact:
Even active dogs can suffer from the effects of being overweight. Extra weight increases wear and tear on their joints, especially during running, jumping, or playing.

Keeping your dog lean helps reduce inflammation, slow arthritis progression, and keep them moving comfortably for longer.

Have you heard about Holly's Army?

CAM understands that managing a chronic disease like osteoarthritis is hard work. It takes its toll not only on the dog, but also their owner. To support owners through this difficult time we set up Holly's Army - an online community, where owners can share their questions, fears and successes!

What does holly's army do well?

- Providing support to owners from people who have been or are going through an arthritis diagnosis
- Evidenced based info in a friendly accessible way
- Providing a safe place for people to ask questions they might not have thought of with their vet, might think are daft, or just to better understand what’s happening with their dog
- Supporting people who are struggling
