As the weather warms up, flies become more active—and so does the risk of fly strike, a serious and sometimes fatal condition for rabbits.
What is fly strike?
Fly strike happens when flies lay eggs on a rabbit’s fur, usually around the bottom or any damp/soiled areas. The eggs hatch into maggots, which can cause severe pain, infection, and even death if not treated promptly.
How to protect your rabbit:
✅ Keep your rabbit’s living area clean and dry
✅ Check your rabbit’s bottom and fur daily for dirt or dampness
✅ Groom regularly, especially long-haired breeds
✅ Seek veterinary help immediately if you notice foul smell, wetness, or maggots
Signs to watch for:
⚠️ Unusual licking or scratching of the hindquarters
⚠️ Foul odor from the fur
⚠️ Lethargy or distress
💡 Tip: Daily inspection during warmer months can save lives. Prevention is much easier than treatment!
Keep your bunnies happy, healthy, and fly-free this season!
