Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery

Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery Local caring and friendly practice for the four legged members of your family! We expanded into our modern premises in Ferring in 2021.

Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery opened on 14th March 2011 with a vision of providing a welcoming and relaxing practice; an environment where we can provide the highest level of care to our patients and our clients. With our great team and fantastic clients, we outgrew our Ferring surgery and in 2018 we opened a sister surgery in East Preston for our clients coming from East Preston, Angmering, R

ustington, Littlehampton and Arundel. It was a challenge to build the surgery during the pandemic but well worth it and we are delighted to show off our new premises to you.

🐾 We’re delighted to welcome Ieva to the team! 🐾

Ieva graduated from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies in 2023 and spent a year and a half working as a GP vet in Latvia before completing a rotating internship at Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service. We’re so pleased she’s now joined our practice, looking forward to becoming part of our lovely community and finding that all-important work-life balance.

Her main interests are internal medicine and the long-term management of chronic conditions in elderly pets. Something she could happily chat about for hours!

Outside of work, you’ll usually find her hiking in the mountains far away from civilisation, or trying new experiences and meeting interesting people!

Please join us in giving her a very warm welcome! 🐶🐱

Here she is giving a lovely cuddle to Ruby after her first vaccinations ❤️💉

🌾 Grass Seeds: Tiny Seeds, Big Trouble for Pets 🌾

Grass seeds may look harmless, but for dogs and other animals they can cause painful injuries and irritation.

These sharp seeds can:
🐾 Lodge between toes
👂 Enter ears
👁 Get stuck in eyes
👃 Be inhaled into the nose
🩺 Work their way under the skin and cause infections or abscesses

⚠️ Signs to watch for:

* Excessive licking or chewing paws
* Head shaking or ear scratching
* Swelling or limping
* Sneezing repeatedly
* Red or weepy eyes
* Sudden pain or sensitivity

🐕 After walks, always check:
✔ Paws and between toes
✔ Ears
✔ Eyes
✔ Armpits and groin
✔ Coat and tail

✂️ Keeping fur trimmed and avoiding long dry grass can help reduce the risk.

If you suspect a grass seed problem, contact us for an appointment 📞

🐾 Why do we stop pets licking their wounds? 🐾

We know the “cone of shame” isn’t every pet’s favourite accessory… but it’s there for a very important reason!

When pets lick, chew, or scratch at wounds or surgery sites, they can:
❌ Cause infections
❌ Pull stitches out
❌ Delay healing
❌ Make wounds much worse

Even though many people think saliva helps healing, too much licking actually damages the skin and introduces bacteria.

There are several ways we can help protect healing wounds, including:
🔹 Buster collars (cones)
🔹 Soft or inflatable collars
🔹 Medical pet shirts/recovery suits
🔹 Bandages and protective dressings

Some pets cope better with certain options than others, and we’re always happy to help find the best solution for your pet 💙

A little inconvenience now can prevent a much bigger problem later and help your pet heal faster and more comfortably 🐶🐱

🌞🐾 Keeping Your Pets Cool in Hot Weather 🐾🌞

As temperatures rise, our furry friends can struggle with the heat more than we realise. Here are a few simple ways to help keep them safe and comfortable this summer:

💧 Always provide fresh, cool water
🌳 Keep walks to early mornings or evenings
🔥 Avoid hot pavements — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
🧊 Offer cooling mats, frozen treats, or damp towels
🚗 Never leave pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes
🏠 Make sure they have shaded, well-ventilated spaces to rest

Watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting, and contact your vet if you’re concerned.

Let’s help our pets stay happy, healthy, and cool during the warmer weather ☀️❤️

Meet Edith 🐾

This gorgeous little pup is starting a very special journey to become a future guide dog. Right now, she’s being cared for by two amazing puppy raisers, who will help teach her all the important basics during her first year of life from confidence and social skills to good manners and lots of love 💛

When Edith is around one year old, she’ll move on to her next stage of intensive training, where she’ll continue learning the skills needed to support and change someone’s life in an incredible way.

She may be small now, but this clever girl has a very big future ahead of her ✨🐶

🐾 When is the right time to neuter your dog? 🐾

Male neutering isn’t always “one age fits all” the ideal timing can depend on your dog’s breed, size, lifestyle and overall health.

For some smaller breeds, neutering earlier may be appropriate, while larger and giant breeds can benefit from waiting until they are more physically mature. Growth, joint development, hormones and behaviour can all play a part in making the best decision for your dog.

That’s why we always recommend an individual discussion with our vet team, so we can help guide you based on your dog’s specific needs 💙

Luca was very brave during his visit with our nurses Hannah and Livvy today 🐶✨

If you have questions about male neutering, our team is always happy to help.

🦟 The Life Cycle of a Flea 🐾

Did you know fleas go through 4 different life stages before becoming the biting pests we all know? 👀

1️⃣ Egg – Adult fleas lay tiny eggs on pets, which often fall into carpets, bedding, and furniture.

2️⃣ Larva – The eggs hatch into worm-like larvae that hide in dark places and feed on organic debris.

3️⃣ Pupa – Larvae spin cocoons and develop into pupae. This stage can last days or even months!

4️⃣ Adult Flea – Once fully developed, adult fleas jump onto pets to feed and start the cycle all over again.

⚠️ One flea can quickly turn into a full infestation, which is why regular flea prevention is so important for your pets and home.

🐶🐱 Keep your furry friends protected all year round
