Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery

Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery Local caring and friendly practice for the four legged members of your family! We expanded into our modern premises in Ferring in 2021.

Ferring Street Veterinary Surgery opened on 14th March 2011 with a vision of providing a welcoming and relaxing practice; an environment where we can provide the highest level of care to our patients and our clients. With our great team and fantastic clients, we outgrew our Ferring surgery and in 2018 we opened a sister surgery in East Preston for our clients coming from East Preston, Angmering, R

ustington, Littlehampton and Arundel. It was a challenge to build the surgery during the pandemic but well worth it and we are delighted to show off our new premises to you.

Even our own team members’ dogs aren’t safe from the sneaky menace that is grass seeds! This is Milo, Lead Vet Beth’s lovely boy, who recently found himself with a painful grass seed lodged in his skin. 😣

You can see the sharp seed heads in his fur — a perfect reminder of how easily they can attach and burrow their way in. These tiny seeds can cause big problems if left untreated: swelling, infection, and even migration under the skin.

Thankfully, Milo was quickly seen and treated (he’s in the best hands after all! 🩺💙), and he’s now back to his usual happy self.

🌿 Top tip: After walks, especially through long grass, always check your dog’s ears, paws, armpits, and groin areas. Prevention is key!

Handsome Magni came in this week after his owners noticed some unusual swellings under his armpit and groin. After a thorough check, we discovered the culprits: grass seeds! 😮

These tiny but troublesome seeds can work their way under the skin, causing irritation, infection, and swelling—especially in thick-coated breeds like Magni. Luckily, we were able to safely remove them and get him back on the road to recovery. 🐶💪

With grass seed season in full swing, it’s a good reminder to check your dogs regularly—especially after walks through long grass. Pay close attention to paws, ears, armpits, and groin areas.

Last week, our brilliant (and surprisingly artistic!) team swapped stethoscopes for paintbrushes at our Sip & Paint evening — complete with animal-themed challenges pulled from a hat.

Highlights included:
🐱 A cat in a cowboy hat
🐍 A snake wearing a tie
🐔 A lizard wearing a Hawaiian shirt
🐹 A hamster wearing a cape

It was the perfect dose of creativity and much-needed laughter — and just another reason why we adore our team! 💙

Angus, our adorable 7-month-old cocker spaniel, came in today for sedation so we could take a closer look at his front feet. He’d been very sensitive to touch and constantly licking them, poor boy 💔

On examination, our team found multiple grass seeds hiding between his toes — luckily, none had fully embedded yet! We also found a small swelling between two digits, likely where a seed had already worked its way in.

Grass seeds can be sneaky and troublesome this time of year, especially for our long-eared, adventurous pups like Angus! 🌱

✨ Betsy was such a brave girl today! ✨

She came in to have a 3cm x 4cm lipoma removed from her abdomen with our lovely vet, Beth Miller. The procedure went smoothly, and Betsy is now back home recovering comfortably 💛

To help her heal and stop her from interfering with the surgical site, she’s gone home in a super stylish medical pet T-shirt 🐶👕

Wishing Betsy a speedy recovery and lots of cuddles from her family! 🐾💕

☀️ The weather is warming up ☀️

Please keep all pets safe in the sun 🐈🐕🐇

Heat stroke is a term commonly used for hyperthermia or elevated body temperature. Generally speaking, if a pet's body temperature exceeds 39.4°C, it is considered abnormal or hyperthermic. Body temperatures above 41°C without previous signs of illness are most commonly associated with exposure to excessive heat and are often referred to as heat stroke. The critical temperature where multiple organ failure and impending death occurs is around 41.2°C to 42.7°C.

Signs of heatstroke-
☀️elevated breathing rates,
☀️dry or sticky gums,
☀️abnormal gum colour,
☀️lethargic or disoriented,
☀️sudden seizures,
☀️Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade,
☀️Drooling
☀️Vomiting or diarrhoea
☀️Reddening and warmth of the ears (rabbits and small furries)
☀️Wetness around the nose. (Rabbits and small furries)

How to prevent heatstroke -
🐾Make sure your pet always has access to a cool shaded area, both indoors and outside

🐾Restrict exercise on warm days (dogs should be walked early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day)

🐾Pack a water bottle on walks

🐾Never leave pets in a car or a hot room

🐾Ensure your pet always has drinking water available. Adding ice can help keep it cool, or a forzen water bottle for small furries such as rabbits.

🐾 cooling mats (especially in rabbit & ginuea pig hutches)

And always remember, hot pavements can burn paws! If it’s too hot to hold your hand on, it’s too hot for your pet to walk on.

Remember we're always here to help, call the Ferring surgery on 01903 241 022 or East Preston surgery on 01903 785 326. Outside of our opening hours you can call Arthur Lodge on 01403 252964 or Vets Now Worthing on 01903 954322.
