The Wildlife Lounge

The Wildlife Lounge Dedicated to helping wildlife in need - local wildlife rehabber. Wildlife must be brought to me. Every pound is spent on looking after wildlife.

Claire’s journey began in 2013 when she saw a young bird in the road, she picked it up and asked a passer-by if he knew what it was. He proceeded to take it out of her hand and throw over the Chapel wall. She went home and then straight back with her husband to look for it. Chris crawled under the bushes and found the bird which they then identified as a young swift. They took it home and began go

ogling and ringing around to various Swift charities to find out how to help the little bird. After guidance from the late Judith Wakelam, Claire rehabilitated the little swift and released it back into the wild. Claire has always loved animals and had a passion for helping wildlife. She even rescued and rehabilitated a baby pigeon when she was still at junior school in Essex! Local vets and the RSPB at Lakenheath all know Claire and direct people to her if they can not help. Over lockdown, Claire and her husband Chris, custom built some enclosures in their back garden to ensure that they can offer the best rehabilitation surroundings for any rescued wildlife that comes to them. Unfortunately, due to space and costs Claire is only able to take a limited amount of wildlife. However she is always happy to offer advice and if she cant take the injured bird or mammal she probably knows someone who may be able to. Claire will always do her best for any bird or mammal that is brought to her, sadly sometimes that means euthanasia - but this is a last resort. Claire has created a ‘paypal account' as well as an 'Amazon Wishlist' and a 'gofundme’ page to help with the costs of looking after each type of species. If you have a few pounds to spare please see the links below to donate.

⚠️ PLEASE DO NOT CUT HEDGES or TREES NOW

The UK has strict laws protecting birds during the nesting season. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it’s illegal to intentionally damage or destroy a bird’s nest while it’s being built or in use.

This means trimming or cutting hedges or trees between March 1st and August 31st can be problematic. The RSPB advises that nesting season lasts throughout this period. The best time for trimming is late winter (February) or early autumn (September to October).

You must not disturb nesting birds, regardless of whether the hedge is on your private land or not, so it’s particularly important to check carefully before cutting any hedge during spring or summer. You must also not cause or permit another person to cut or trim.

Garden maintenance during nesting season requires extra vigilance. Before any cutting, carefully check hedges for signs of active nests, which might include adult birds frequently visiting specific spots, carrying nesting materials, or making alarm calls when you approach the hedge.

Disturbing nesting birds can result in fines up to £5,000 per incident and potential prosecution. The severity of penalties depends on the specific circumstances and impact on wildlife. Report to the police (101) as a wildlife crime. If you can, gather some evidence -
Photographs or video footage of the activity;
Exact location & if possible, the name of the person cutting;
Details of any birds nesting in the hedge.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi all, I’m planning on doing a prize bingo around Easter time (then again later in the year) to raise money for The Wildlife Lounge. I am a (non-profit) wildlife rehabber in Feltwell and really need to raise funds to be able to keep going. I wondered if any of you lovely people would be willing to donate towards it please? I don’t need smellies or candles (as have a lot of these already donated) but do need other new things that I can use - or even a few £££ to buy some prizes. Thank you ☺️🤞☺️

Thought this might be useful to some people. Our lovely garden birds.

EDIT:
I should have said that I am still able to care for many birds and other wildlife that needs help and am always happy to offer advise. Am also happy to check over a pigeon, dove, corvid or gull if needed (I’ll be wearing ppe of course), I just can’t keep them here. Please feel free to ask.

I do miss caring for the pigeons and doves but just can no longer do it due to breathing issues. I have also been told not to take corvids or gulls too. They are all such lovely birds and I was gutted when I was told. I did still take on a dove and then a crow but each time, within hours, my breathing changed. If you find one that needs help, I know it may mean travelling a little further to a rescue but they are so worth it ❤️

Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet, but things have still been going on behind the scenes - getting ready for this years season...

Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet, but things have still been going on behind the scenes - getting ready for this years season, as well as looking after a few visitors.

I've heard from fellow rehabber that a small flock of Swallows has been spotted at Polzeath beach in Cornwall. I know a some swallow colonies have attempted to overwinter at a couple of places in Cornwall before, so I wonder if that’s what this little flock has done. Not sure how many survive though.
Hopefully quite a few 🤞🤞🤞
House Martins were spotted on the Isle of Skye earlier last week. It seems very early but it means it won’t be long until they start to arrive followed by the swifts.
If you would be willing to make a contribution towards the upcoming costs of rehabilitating all these lovely birds (and others) it would be very much appreciated. You can donate via friends and family on Paypal to [email protected]
Thank you so much for your support.
