As Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month comes to a close for another year, we wanted to personally thank each of our nursing team for their hard work and dedication every day, throughout each and every year!

The glue that sticks the team together, the backbone of the practice and often the unsung heroes of the veterinary team.

Veterinary Nursing is a profession in it's own right, they have strived to become the best they can to help care for your pets and they continue to learn, study and achieve further qualifications to improve their, already amazing, abilities! 🌟

We are lucky to have 6 RVNs (two of which are our Head Nurses, who assist in leading the team) and 2 SVNs. Just think how much experience and knowledge those 8 individuals combined offer to the team!

We thank you all! 💚

Does your cat seem to be constantly grooming?

This can lead to hair thinning or loss and skin sores, usually around the belly, sides and the inside of the back legs.

Overgrooming is often a sign of a skin problem, but it can sometimes be caused by pain or anxiety. When a cat grooms, endorphins are released, which can soothe a ‘stressed’ cat and be a form of self-soothing.

⚠️ Cats are very good at hiding if they’re unhappy in their environment.

Contact us for further support if your cat is overgrooming and you are unsure of the cause.

The subtle (but crucial signs) of an anxious dog...

Spotting them can help you know when to stop and give your dog the space it is asking for.

Giving them space can help to calm them down and prevent their behaviour escalating.

If we feel your dog is showing signs of anxiety in a consultation we will stop and discuss a planned approach for whichever treatment or procedure is required.

This could be rescheduling for another day or rebooking after administering some prescribed medication to help calm them and make them feel less anxious.

We will work with your dogs best interest in mind and we don't want to push them to become overally anxious. We want our patients to be comfortable in the veterinary setting as we know how stressful it can be for YOU and YOUR pet.

If you have any concerns or questions, please do reach out to the team and we will be more than happy to help.

Brother and sister, Aragorn and Arwen visited our Farnham surgery last week to be neutered and microchipped. They didn't leave each other's sides 🖤🤍

They are both part of our health plan so their pawrents received 10% off their neutering costs and they were microchipped for just £10!

We are sure you will agree they are extremely cute 😍

Are there any other pets out there named in honour of characters from The Lord of the Rings? Let us know in the comments! We would love to hear them 🧙‍♂️💍🧝🏻‍♂️🏰📜

So it's not all about routine scheduled procedures in veterinary practice...

We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight our nursing team, as it's Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, when your pet is admitted for treatment, our nurses do a lot of the inpatient care in collaboration with our vet team. This is generally unseen and so you may not be aware how much they do behind closed doors!

Over the last week or so, we have had some poorly inpatients that required staying with us for treatments to help them feel better. Rocco and Ruby were amongst them 🤎

With the on duty vet coming up with your pets individual patient plan, our nursing team will:

💚 monitor them meticulously throughout their stay, recording it all on their own hospital sheet

💚 place, manage and monitor their intravenous fluid therapy and intravenous catheter

💚 administer drugs prescribed at appropriate timings

💚 generally care for your pet, this includes (but not limited to) taking dogs out for toilet breaks, keeping bedding/litter trays clean, cuddles and attention, grooming, offering food which often involves some encouragement or taking time to hand feed.

Thank you to our nursing team for being our patients advocates, and emotional support friends.

We do hope both Ruby and Rocco are feeling better ☺️

While the air temperature might seem bearable, remember that the pavement can be scorching hot for our furry friends' paws.

If you can't hold the back of your hand to the pavement for 5-7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's delicate paws.

Protecting your pet's paws is key during the summer months. Opt for walks during cooler times of the day and stick to grassy areas where possible.

Heatstroke cases in pets are all too common; share the below far and wide!

Many dogs get heatstroke when their owners take them out during high temperatures. Let's prevent heatstroke by knowing when it's safe to take your dog outside, and please contact us immediately if you think your dog might have heatstroke! And remember to keep your pets hydrated and ensure they are given plenty of shade to chill in.

Enjoy the sunshine, but please keep tabs on your pets.
