🎃Halloween - trick , treat or toxin?
Halloween is an exciting time of year. However, it can also cause problems for our pets with sweets and decorations around the home and outside. If you are concerned, call us for advice.
👻Glow sticks - when chewed, have a very bitter taste which can cause some distress and dribbling. A drink of water will help to ease this.
👻Chocolate - affects the heart rate and central nervous system and cause gastrointestinal upset depending on the quantity ingested and the type of chocolate.
👻Raisins - risk of kidney injury even if only a small number are ingested.
👻Chewing gum - sugar-free gum often contains high levels of a sweetener called xylitol which can cause hypoglycaemia and also liver disease.
👻Pumpkins - shop bought pumpkins could cause sickness and diarrhoea if ingested but are not likely to be the more toxic bitter variety. Mouldy pumpkins carry a risk of tremorgenic mycotoxins.
👻Candles - risk of burns. If ingested, the wax will usually pass through but there is a risk of obstruction and there may also be vomiting and diarrhoea
