Most dog owners want the same core things from their dogs.

A dog who chooses to walk next to their person without pulling

A dog who can safely run around and have fun off lead

A dog that’s good around livestock, children, traffic and other dogs

A dog who can settle easily in new places

The thing is… all these things need to be taught

Look at these photos of my gang..
Katie’s lovely loose lead… hours, weeks and months went into this so now she walks easily without pulling.
Buddy off lead on the beach.. hes 15 now but had zero recall around dogs and people when he came to live with me age 7 (he couldn’t even take treats outside) and months of training developed a great recall.

The wild ponies.. these 2 ponies came cantering towards us on the moor.. it was safer in that moment to leave Buddy off lead. He was very calm with the horses because I’ve introduced him to lots of animals and he knows to stay still and calm because that’s what I’ve taught him.

All 4 dogs have settled calmly in holiday accommodation because I worked a lot on calmness with them when they were younger. They are ok being left alone because I spent LOADS of time teaching them

If we don’t actively teach them and show them what to do.. how can they possibly know what we expect?

None of my dogs will ever win prizes for being pedigree (because non of them are) or for competition/sport… because I don’t dedicate the time to a particular thing 😳
Instead , I’ve focused on having very steady calm family dogs, super versatile that are easy to take anywhere and enjoy guests coming to our home and having fun adventures.

Are they perfect?
Definitely not!!

They hate seeing dogs walk past when going in or out of my van or the front door (this is due to several bad incidents where dogs have run up our drive at them or tried to get into the van 😳

Katie rolls in p**p when ever it’s there and she knows I’m not looking.
Katie and Buddy bark out the window if dogs go by or a motorbike appears

But we are continuing to work on these things because if I don’t reach them, how do they know?

If you need some help, get in touch, every dog is different😀

I’ve seen 4 dogs this week who have become reactive and scared due to poor first introductions… go slow… don’t assume your dog will readily accept a new friend… be cautious and careful so it doesn’t go basis wrong 😬

Rushing➡️Risky!
It's a big deal for dogs to accept. Many just don't if it's rushed.
There are proven ways to help with these introductions.
Whether you want a permanent new dog as an additional family member or maybe just want your friend's dog to visit your home and have yours comfortable (and who knows, maybe even a friendship)!

Neutral areas.
What does that even mean?
It means somewhere your dog has a low attachment to.
No history, no scent left there and no emotions attached. It isn't their territory.
Yards are certainly not usually neutral and streets may not be either (if one dog or the other has visited).

Parallel walks.
You may need a few but watching body language is key here.

Inside the home.
Avoid those sparks and remove items that can cause issues (or restrict access).
Food.
Rewards.
Beds.
Couches.

Even affection being shown by you towards can cause an issue.

Yes, this is very much a cautious approach.
Why?
Because I don't think there isn't a trainer out there that hasn't seen the damage caused when this is rushed by people.
We are called in when it has gone very, very wrong.

Do it right.
Take your time and give this your absolute best, slowly.

Having some adventures on our journey back to wales to start the university year 2 stage for my oldest boy!
Traffic has been a nightmare but the dogs have enjoyed our stops!

When the evenings are dark, it’s not always enjoyable walking along but find a brightly lit carpark and you can have lots of fun.. mud free, playing some active games with your dog😀

Katie loves a bit of herding activities and this is one of her fav games.. sheepballs isn’t just about running, it’s thinking and watching how I move.. just 10 mins of this and she was quite happy to have a sniff and head back to the van!

Dark evenings don’t mean you can’t exercise your dog.. you just need to be creative 😘😜
