The Dug Hoose

The Dug Hoose The Dug Hoose offers a bespoke dog walking service and licensed home boarding. πŸΆπŸ• I cannot imagine my home without one.

The Dug Hoose was established in January 2015, after I left a thirty year career with the Civil Service. It was time for a change and I wanted to do something which indulged my passion and interest for dogs. Dogs have been a part of my life from a very young age, when I learned how to care for them and become a responsible owner. Through the years I have also been involved with dog training and showing my own dogs.

I have the best job but the greatest downside is when a dog passes away...

Nice wee walk along to Helix Park with a friend and the dogs, of course. 😁 Lovely weather too.

I don't normally post opinions on social media but I am going to make an exception today.
Given the number of veterinary practices in Falkirk District, I find it absolutely disgraceful that there is no adequate, local out of hours service for clients. People are expected to drive/make their way to Edinburgh or Glasgow to get their pets treated.
One of my clients contacted me just before 6pm last night, in distress, trying to access a vet.
One of her dogs was under medical care but quickly deteriorated last night. Her vet practice uses PDSA in Gorgie, Edinburgh for out of hours emergencies. She doesn't have a car, the one pet ambulance service available in Falkirk was busy and she couldn't get someone to speak with. No taxi service would assist either as they wouldn't be able to help move the dog- which I can understand. Another service said they could attend to euthanise her dog (Β£500) but it would be Monday morning before anyone would arrive.
Imagine that situation, with a seriously ill pet, and you've no transport, can't actually speak with anyone on the phone and no local vet to help you πŸ˜” Absolutely awful.
My husband ended up helping her move her(very large) dog out of her second floor flat, into his car, and driving them through to Edinburgh at 7pm last night. Very distressing time for all. Unfortunately, her dog was put to sleep but I take some comfort knowing that we managed to help otherwise that poor dog would have died at home, in pain. That's just unacceptable and I'm sure dog/pet owners alike, will agree.
The vast majority of our local veterinary practices are now owned by large corporate organisations and I have certainly noticed the decline, over the last decade anyway, with the out of hours service offered. Clients are expected to travel outside the district for medical help with their pets. Really disgraceful as there are lots of people who will struggle ( and have done) with this arrangement. I board dogs for my business so I am affected by this too. I dreaded the thought of having to travel in the wee small hours for medical help with my own dogs, never mind someone else's! It's a real worry 😟
I hope others will agree when I say that this is not an adequate service and falls short of the acceptable. Something has to change. Quickly. 😐
