𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠

I wrote this today after the Scottish weather broke me, I’m soaked to the skin because apparently I don’t know what a waterproof coat is 🤣

So, you fancy being a riding coach? Right, here’s the reality check!!!!

You’ll work stupid hours. 13, 14, 15 a day. Not for champagne, just enough for diesel, leccy, and maybe a soggy Greggs pasty eaten in the car between lessons.
You’ll freeze in winter, roast in summer, and the rest of the year you’ll be permanently damp. Christmas? Forget pigs in blankets, you’ll be the pig, muddy, wet, and still shouting “heels down.”

People will say you’re too soft, too strict, too old-fashioned, too modern. Basically, whatever you do, you’re wrong.
Shows? Glamorous? Don’t kid yourself. It’s you, stood in a bog, yelling “sit up” at someone who’s pretending not to hear.
Parents? Half of them think their kid’s ready for Badminton, when they can’t even steer in trot.

You’ll see tears, tantrums, bolting ponies, and more drama than Love Island. Some days you’ll mutter, “That’s it, I’m done.”

But then…

That nervous kid finally canters.
That “lazy cob” pings a jump.
That adult says, “I’d have quit riding if it weren’t for you.”
And suddenly, there it is, the reason you put yourself through all this madness.

Why don’t people tell you this?
Because if they did, no one would become a coach.
And because the best bits? They can’t be put into words.

So here we are , cold, broke, dripping wet, boots squelching… and still, somehow, happy.

Representation of what I look like today 🤣

Better late than never post and squeezing this in before we turn our attention to Scottish Champs! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏆

Riders headed up to Cabin Equestrian Centre in Aberdeen a few weeks ago to the Petplan Area Festivals hosted by Gordon Dressage Group. From what I heard it was organised to perfection so well done to everyone involved!

They certainly made their presence felt with 5 tickets to Area Festival Championships secured and 9 podium positions!

Massive congratulations to

Michelle Matthew and Parc Black gaining another title by winning the Novice Silver FSM class. They are proving a force to be reckoned with in music and look forward to seeing how they get on at champs now with 2 classes to contest! 🪲 🧃

Rebecca Robb claimed 2 golden tickets winning the title in the Elementary Silver and taking the reserve spot in the Medium silver with Brodnants Diamond Bracelet. 💎

Lilly Godfrey and the improving and very special Knoxville Eastwood Valdez took bridesmaid place in Medium Bronze class securing their ticket for Champs in October. We eagerly await them winning their first sash/title one day soon 🤞🙏😍

Alison Anderson and Lumcloon Hannah claimed their magic ticket in the Prelim Silver FSM class taking 2nd place. 🤎

Congratulations to Helen Robertson, Chelsea Dowling, Chloe Balfour and JoAnne Murray who all made a podium appearance. 🥂🥳

We now await the Petplan Championship wildcard announcement and are 🤞 🙏

Summer Regionals 2025

Great weekend spent at Snec!

Even if I do say so myself SESDG really do run the best shows 😝

4 magic tickets to “Nationals” 🥳

On Saturday Imogen Casley consistent as ever secured a respectable 3rd in a very close at the top elementary silver class just missing out on a direct qualification to the “Nationals” (found out this week though they got a wildcard 🎉 ). However she absolutely smashed it on Sunday and rode a solid novice test to produce a plus 70% and take the title and a direct qualification 🥳 it is an absolute pleasure to be part of Imogen and PJ’s journey and I feel she will be overtaking me soon 🤣🤣 Carl has never moaned about Charlotte beating him 🤪

Lily Godfrey and one of my fav horses Knox so nearly got a sash and the title in the elementary silver but just got piped with last horse to go! However still got that magic ticket to “Nationals” and I am sure so much more to look forward to! This is a seriously talented horse but hasn’t been the easiest and Lily has done such a good job! I will always be their number 1 fan!

My beautiful Kianca gave me a lovely ride (apart from an expensive 🤧 moment by a spectator) in the medium to finish 2nd but found out this week we got a wildcard and are now also “Nationals” bound 😁

Lynne Wearing finished 4th in Novice Silver and Dawn Harrison 6th in elementary silver.

Another solid set of results by Dewar Dressage and now excited to turn my attention to Petplan in Aberdeen 🤞 for some more tickets to Area Festival Championships.

Oh and the 🍾 keeps coming in 😂

Loved arriving to teach Aileen and Indie today and seeing this!!! 🥰. Prelim Bronze Area Festival Champions 2025!

A few of my riders have been underdressed for their lessons lately and need to follow Aileen’s example even though Indie is less than impressed 😂

Michelle Mathew appreciated the plaits and the matchy matchy but defo something missing last night 🤣

You’ll all be pleased to know my champagne 🍾collection has had a wee boost lately 🤣

🥁 🥁 🥁 Summer Area Festival 2025 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Omg where to start!
Dewar Dressage you absolutely smashed it!
45 tests ridden!
37 top 10 places!
19 Podium finishes!
AND 9 direct qualifications 🍾
I honestly couldn’t be prouder ☺️
It was a weekend of do as I say and not as I do 😂
My horses were not on side and results disappointing but I got a mega photo of Bruno (see below) so all not lost 🙈 you can’t win at everything and it was definitely a weekend to celebrate coaching and not riding 🤪
The first sash was won my the ever consistent Imogen Casley who absolutely smashed a new level to them to take the win in the Medium Bronze class. Her and King Cotton Legacy have only done a handful of mediums so this really was quite impressive 👏
The next win went to Michelle Mathew and her smart boy Parc Black Knight in the Prelim Silver FSM. Michelle has found a real love with dressage to music and it really helped her gain confidence competing in the early days. She has worked so hard for this and I am super proud of them.
The 3rd win went to Chloe Balfour and Jersey 🥹
I cannot express how deserved this is and I may have shed a tear or 2! I have a real soft spot for this partnership and have been lucky enough to see them develop through all the levels! I have loved being part of this journey - Chloe my job is done!!🤣
The last win went to Aileen Anderson and Kalyana Indie taking the win from 33 starters in the prelim bronze class with a plus 70%! Again Aileen and I have a long standing relationship and often wonder what would have happened if Aileen hadn’t attended that random clinic about 4 years ago 🤪
Special mention to Katherine Buckle and her tricky little Lady Dernier who claimed 2 qualifying tickets at their first dressage championship 👏

Fab day yesterday at Rockrose Equestrian Sports Centre for my busy clinic!

Newly refurbished arena was riding well 🥰
With all doors open the arena really wasn’t too hot so that was a pleasant surprise 😅
