If your cat begins eliminating outside the litter box, don’t assume it’s simply a behavioral issue. In many cases, the cause may be medical. It’s essential to first rule out any underlying health concerns with your veterinarian. Once your cat receives a clean bill of health, you can then focus on identifying potential environmental or behavioral factors contributing to litter box avoidance.

Many cats like to scratch horizontally instead of vertically. Many cats like to have the option of both. If you provided your cat with a scratching post and it isn't getting used, first make sure it's the right type of material (typically sisal) and that it's sturdy. If the post is a good quality one and isn't isn't getting used, try offering a horizontal scratching pad.

Remember, location is also a factor in whether a scratching post or pad gets used. Don't hide them away in rooms where your cat doesn't tend to go. Typically, they should be located in socially significant areas of the home.

Many people who live with shorthaired cats don't think they need to be groomed, but regular brushing is still very important to keep the coat healthy, remove loose hair, and it also gives you the opportunity to do a health check.

Keep pets safe and away from areas where you are cleaning carpets or floors.

About us

Our motto at IFB is Feline welfare at our core!

It's not only our canine friends that can have behavioural issues, our feline friends can too. International Feline Behaviourists (IFB) was formed in 2019 and is the feline division of ICB: International Canine Behaviourists ltd.

In 2018 it became apparent that although there were many organisations for canine behaviourists to join, there were none for feline behaviourists. International Canine Behaviorists (ICB) founder Brigitte Barton realised the need for a feline behaviourist organisation and after a meeting with feline behaviourist and feline expert Roberta Roscini, International Feline Behaviourists (IFB) was formed.

International Feline Behaviourists (IFB) will have the same rigorous application process for membership that ICB has.
