Part two – Sanctuary rooms. 🐱🏠
When will my cat be ready to leave their Sanctuary Room?

In our previous post we talked about the importance of a sanctuary room for your new cat. On arriving home, leave your cat to explore their new room for an hour or so before introducing yourself and your family. Some cats might need longer so be prepared to go at your pet’s pace. If they choose to hide, sit quietly in the same room and talk to them gently. Avoid forcing them to come out. You’ll need to give them plenty of time to adjust, especially if they are particularly shy.

Worried that your cat still hasn’t come out of hiding? As long as they are eating and drinking and using their litter tray, there is no need to worry. If your cat is too shy to eat, you may want to move their food bowl closer to their hiding place and leave the room. We're only a phone call away if you need advice. ☎

As your cat settles in, you might see signs that they are becoming happy and comfortable in their new environment. Signs they are settling in might include:
💕no longer hiding away and seeming more confident
💕 seeking you out for attention and company
💕 eating well
💕 playing
💕 brushing up against you and items in the home to leave their scent on them
💕 regularly grooming themselves
💕 once allowed, exploring the house

Once your cat has been introduced to your family and pets and seems settled and content in your home, only then can you allow them to explore outdoors. It is essential that all windows and doors remain closed in the house until the cat is allowed outside. We usually advise between three and four weeks (this can be longer for shy cats and kittens), as this will ensure they have spread their scent around and will be likely to know their way home. The first time you let your cat out, do so before a meal however far they venture, they’ll be more likely to return for food when you call.

Let’s talk about “Sanctuary Rooms” for cats. 🐱🏠

Welcoming a new cat or kitten into your home is an exciting experience and can be the beginning of a wonderful companionship. There are a few things you need to do to prepare for their arrival, the first thing is to set up a Sanctuary room for them.

Before you take your new cat home, you’ll need to set up a safe space with everything they need. A quiet room away from busy areas of the house is ideal (avoid bathrooms/kitchens) – it’ll give them a chance to relax before exploring everywhere. For many cats and kittens going from a small pen into a large house can be overwhelming and scary. Many cats will hide for the first few days, so having them in one room will make it easier for you to find them. Make sure their sanctuary room is private for them, please keep other pets, children and guests out. Make sure it’s safe from potential hazards - why kitchens and bathrooms aren't recommended.

Your sanctuary room should include:
🐾 an area for food and a separate one for water
🐾 at least one litter tray placed as far away as possible from their food and water in a private location
🐾 a place to hide – perhaps a cardboard box or a snuggly bed somewhere cosy
🐾 access to a high spot. Cat perches are great for cats that like to climb but a cardboard box on a sturdy shelf is just as good
🐾 a suitable place to sleep
🐾 a scratching post & a few cat toys to allow them to play

When you take your new cat home and release them into their set up quiet room with the door closed. Open the door of the carrier and allow them to come out in their own time. Your new cat should spend a few days in this room before being gradually allowed to explore the rest of the house. Every cat is different, and some may only need a couple of days – some may need longer if they are more nervous or shy. Spend time in the room with your cat, always allowing them to come to you for interaction when they chose. If your cat is hiding just sit in the room and spend some time chatting to them and encouraging play with toys.

It's ! Meet Claude, a handsome 10 year old boy looking for his new home. He is affectionate and will rub up against you for a fuss. He likes to play with toys so this could be a good way to bond with him. Claude could potentially live with calm cat-aware teenagers who will approach him calmly. He would like to be the only pet so he can have all attention to himself. Claude would like to have access to a safe garden away from busy roads so that he can explore.

Beau is a sweet 5 year old cat looking for a loving new home. She can be wary of new places and people and need encouragement and patience to settle in. Once comfortable she will run up to you and loudly ask for attention, quickly making herself comfortable in your lap given the chance. She would like to be the only pet in a quiet household as she can get startled easily. Beau would like access to a safe garden to explore, away from busy roads.
