Why Obedience Will NOT Fix Your Dog’s Reactivity! 🐾
Don’t get me wrong—obedience training is fantastic. It’s a brilliant tool for relationship building, and there is nothing better than having a well-trained dog you can confidently take anywhere.
But when it comes to reactivity? Obedience alone just won’t cut it.
Reactivity is much deeper than a simple lack of manners or a broken “sit” command. It is an emotional response to massive feelings inside your dog. When a dog is over threshold, asking for a heel or a down-stay is often just putting a plaster on a deeply rooted emotional wound.
Instead of forcing strict compliance, we need to address the root cause. Here are three crucial elements to focus on instead:
1. Provide the Right Outlet 🦊
Every breed has specific, hardwired biological needs. Educate yourself on what your dog was bred to do and find an outlet that satisfies that drive. For many reactive dogs, structured play is a game-changer for releasing pent-up energy. Look at what works best for your breed:
Chasing or stalking
Tugging games
Using a flirt pole
2. Up the Physical & Mental Exercise 🏃♂️
A lot of reactive dogs are simply operating on a surplus of unspent adrenaline. Many could benefit from nearly double the exercise they are currently getting, specifically looking for safe opportunities to run off-lead and burn off that stress.
3. Focus on the Relationship ❤️
At the end of the day, relationship is key. Ask yourself:
Does my dog actually want to be with me out in the world?
Do they choose to engage with me when we are outside, or are they entirely consumed by the environment?
Building a rock-solid bond based on trust and mutual engagement will always do more for a reactive dog than a lifetime of strict drills. Focus on the feelings, not just the behavior! 👇
