Foal with Carpal Valgus

A young foal presented with carpal valgus deformity requiring early conservative management to support correct limb development during this important growth phase.

Management included:• Fitting small medial lifts to assist alignment while primarily protecting the solar surface of the foot• Box rest for 10 days• Followed by 10 days of restricted exercise• Gradual increase in turnout time thereafter to encourage controlled strengthening and natural development

Early intervention and careful management are key in these cases, helping reduce excessive strain on developing joints and soft tissues while allowing the foal to continue developing correctly.

Monitoring will continue as turnout and exercise levels are progressively increased.

A busy Monday morning at the forge.

Fitted these Jim Blurton easy care cuffs with a rolled toe, on a show jumper with a broken-back HPA, providing additional heel support and using dental impression material to help absorb concussion forces, particularly at the heel."

A nasty crack caused by a sharp stone

The priority for me is to stabilise the crack and allow it to heal at the coronet band,
I debribed as much as possible and glued it back in place with an equilox patch, then applied a hoof cast for extra stability, finally I floated a bar shoe to unload the affected area I'm confident it will heal but there may be some scarring (false quarter)

First time shoeing this horse, presented with damage to the coronet band causing an irregular growth which I trimmed off to keep neat and tidy

Just a quick message, I havent been as active on here in recent months due to being busy in the thick of foaling season and showjumping in full swing

As most of my clients know, I've recently joined up with my former employer in England Gary Pickford at Chapel Forge Farriers
Gary brings years of experience in showjumping and in particular the thoroughbred industry
