✨ DIESEL ✨

This gorgeous boy is an 18 month old Labrador x Mudi mix. His guardians got in contact as they needed help with his reactivity. Diesel is an excitable, adolescent dog with herding instincts and this shows up as barking and lunging at other dogs on walks 💥

People often think that training reactivity needs to be done when the dog is reacting, when in reality there is so much outside of being in the presence of a trigger that actually helps address reactivity 👍🏼

I suggested his guardians did breed specific activities/games to give an outlet for his herding instincts, as well as working on building up focus with themselves 👏🏼

These methods will have a significant impact in helping with the behavioural modification we are doing to change his emotional response to his triggers 🥳

After two sessions he’s showing great progress. I look forward to continuing our journey! 🥰

✨ ZELDA ✨

Gorgeous Zelda had her first training session with me today! We worked on engagement around distractions and a little bit of recall ☺️

Zelda is almost 4 months old and has a lot to learn. She’s an eager girl and I’m looking forward to watching her develop! 🥰

✨ TIME AND PATIENCE ✨

It is very rare in dog training to see a change in behaviour overnight. It’s important to give training/behavioural plans time to take effect and also have patience with your dog 🐶

This is even more applicable with reactivity 💥

I have been working with Tink on her reactivity through weekly 1-2-1 training walks for the past 6 months. Previously, a dog at any distance would cause her to bark and lunge and now she happily watches from a distance and chooses to engage with me instead! 🤩

This doesn’t mean that Tink never reacts…close proximity and certain breeds can cause a reaction, but these are becoming less frequent/intense and she recovers much more quickly 👏🏼

We’ve worked at Tink’s pace and it’s paying off. I’m sure this sweet girl will continue to improve as we carrying on working together 🥰

✨ TRAINING WALKS ✨

Gorgeous boy, Rex, is a teenager now and is showing normal teenager behaviour 🤪

After completing my puppy course, Rex’s guardian wanted to fit in some training even when she isn’t around. Today we worked on calmness and engagement around distractions and he did a great job! 👏🏼

If you need a bit of extra help with training or want to enrich your dog’s time whilst you’re at work, then please get in touch to find out about training walks! ☺️

✨ GROMIT ✨

Gromit is a 1 year old Doberman and his guardians got in contact after rehoming him recently 🐶

Gromit came to them with some behaviours that could become challenging if not addressed, so they wanted to give him the best start! 🥳

He’s working his way through a 5-week course with me, so we can help him with some of the things he struggles with ☺️

I can’t wait to see how this sweet boy progresses!

✨ Marker Training ✨

What is marker training? 🤨

It is a method of training the uses a distinct and consistent word (yes!) or sound (clicker) to pinpoint the precise moment a dog demonstrates a desired behavior 🐶

This ‘marker’ allows us to bridge the gap between the desired behaviour and the reward, allowing to the dog to understand that they did something great and a treat is coming. By positively reinforcing these desired behaviours, the dog is more likely to repeat them 👍🏼

So why use a marker?

💫 Clear communication. It gives your dog a very precise understanding of what behaviour gets them a reward 🦴

💫 Positive reinforcement. It is a positive and scientifically-backed method of training. Which we’re all here for 🥳

💫 Efficient and reduces frustration. Marking will often speed up training as due to the precision of the method, dogs are a less likely to get frustrated and will pick things up more quickly 🐶

💫 A major tool in behavioural work. We can actually change the emotional response of the dog to certain stimuli through this method, which can help with reactivity, fear and overstimulation 👍🏼

If you would like to get started with marker training or are wondering how marker training may help you and your dog, please get in touch 🥰

✨ Large breed puppies ✨

This stunning chap is Rex, he’s a German Shepherd x Standard Poodle. And the difference between these photos…? Just 3 weeks! 😳

Puppies grow very quickly and you may not notice it on a day-to-day basis but if you look back at photos you’ll see just how much they’ve grown! 👀

There are a few things to consider when taking on any puppy, but a large breed puppy in particular:

🐶 They tend to take longer to grow than smaller breeds which means being more careful with their joints for longer.

🐶 There is more pressure from society for them to ‘behave’, due to their size. A Dachshund puppy is unlikely to knock over an elderly person when jumping up compared to a bouncy Labrador.

🐶 It’s important to teach good lead walking skills whilst they are still small. That 8kg pup is going to turn into a 30kg+ teenager quicker than you can blink!

🐶 It’s important not to reinforce unwanted behaviours such as jumping up, mouthing or pulling on lead, as these can become not so cute when they are fully grown!

🐶 Larger breeds can be more prone to bloat so rest your pup for a good hour before and after eating.

Puppies are like sponges, set them up for success and teach them desired behaviours and life skills that you want them to carry through to adulthood! 🥰

✨ Pain management ✨

Pain can be a huge contributing factor when looking at behaviour in dogs. It can present more obviously as reduced mobility, but also as hyperactivity, reactivity 💥

It’s important to have a vet do a thorough investigation to help determine the cause of pain, so an effective and appropriate treatment can be administered 💊

But here are some things you can do to help your dog that may be in pain:

💫 Giving pain medication as prescribed.

💫 Allowing access to multiple areas for your dog to sleep/rest. Ensuring they have choice and can get comfy at all times.

💫 Putting rugs/runners on hard floors. Your dog will be able to move more naturally and steadily if they have traction and are not worried about slipping.

💫 Raising water and food bowls to body height, to prevent stretching or straining.

💫 Using a well fitted harness and longer lead/long line. This allows them to move more freely/naturally and gives them more choice over their movement as they walk/explore.

💫 Have patience. Your dog may not be responding to you for many reasons, but pain could be one of them. Train with patience and kindness.

If you have any sudden changes in behavioural issues, then please contact your vet 🐶
