📍 Microchipping Importance

A microchip is a simple, permanent way to help identify your pet if they ever get lost 🐾

Unlike collars or tags, a microchip:
✔ Cannot be removed or fall off
✔ Holds a unique ID linked to your contact details
✔ Greatly increases the chance of reunification

Make sure your contact details are always up to date—this is just as important as the chip itself 💙

If you’re unsure whether your pet is microchipped or registered correctly, we can help check for you. Give us a call on 01353 658333. 🐶🐱

❗️INSURANCE CLAIMS❗️

For each new claim we must have a completed, signed claim form with all the owner relevant boxes filled out. This includes, name, address, conditions and start date. Some insurance companies allow a claim to be submitted via an online portal, these must be completed by the policy holder. Please let us know if the policy is under a different name to the name we have on our system.

For continuation claims we will still need a completed form or we require you to submit a claim online.

Please note there is a £20 admin fee for any new condition being claimed for, if part of our Isle Pet Club this fee does not apply.

Unfortunately, we do not routinely authorise direct claims.

🐛 Worming Education for Pets

Worms aren’t always visible—but they can still affect your pet’s health 🐾

Even healthy-looking pets can carry worms, and symptoms are often subtle or absent.

Worming is important because it helps:
✔ Protect your pet’s digestive health
✔ Prevent discomfort and illness
✔ Reduce the risk of spread to other animals

Remember—fleas can also transmit certain types of worms, so parasite control works best as a complete routine 💙

If you’re unsure how often your pet should be treated, we’re happy to advise 🐶🐱

🌾 Grass seeds: a hidden summer hazard for pets 🐶🐱

As the weather warms up, grass seeds become more common — and they can cause real problems for curious pets exploring outdoors ☀️🐾

These small seeds can easily attach to fur and work their way into the skin, ears, eyes, or paws 😟

Signs your pet may have a grass seed problem:
• Sudden limping or licking a paw 🐾
• Head shaking or scratching at ears 👂
• Swelling, redness, or pain 🔴
• Discharge or squinting from an eye 👁️
• A small lump or abscess forming 📍

Grass seeds can travel deeper into the body and require veterinary treatment, so early attention is important 🚨

Prevention tips:
🧴 Check your pet after walks, especially paws, ears, and underarms
✂️ Keep longer fur trimmed during peak season
🚶‍♂️ Avoid overgrown grassy areas where possible
🧼 Brush your pet regularly to remove hidden seeds

If you suspect a grass seed, don’t try to remove it yourself if it’s embedded — contact us on 01353 65333 for safe removal 🏥💙

A quick check after walks can save your pet a lot of discomfort 🐾✨

💖 This is the story of Fishfinger 💖

Fishfinger came into Isle vets as an unborn kitten. Fishfinger’s pregnant mum came in for an appointment as her labour didn’t seem to be progressing as it should which is a medical emergency.

JJ, one of our vets, recommended that we should perform an ultrasound on the mum to see how many kittens there were and if there were any obvious reasons as to why there may be issues with the pregnancy.

The scan revealed that the kittens, of which there were three, appeared to have no
heartbeats and did not seem to be fully formed.

JJ recommended that the mum should have an emergency caesarean because she
would not be able to deliver the kittens herself and there was risk of a severe uterine infection.

Clara, one of our vets, performed the caesarean and removed two of the kittens that had sadly passed away. When Clara removed the third kitten, Megan (RVN) and Holly (SVN) noticed that there was a very faint heartbeat. They immediately started resuscitating the premature kitten using massage and oxygen
therapy to stimulate a response. Megan and Holly worked on the kitten for TWO hours – continuing with the massage, oxygen therapy and maintaining the kitten's temperature using heat aids.

We are happy to report that the kitten and her mum both survived the caesarean and fully recovered!

Fishfinger, a girl, has been in for her vaccines and is thriving. It is so lovely to have such a happy ending to a difficult and sad case.

That is the story of Fishfinger! 🌟

🐣 Found a baby bird? Here’s what to do 💙

Spring and summer often mean more young birds on the ground — and it’s not always a cause for concern 🐦🌿

Before intervening, take a moment to assess the situation 👀

🐤 Is it a fledgling (feathered, hopping, flapping)?
These birds are often learning to fly and are usually still being cared for by their parents nearby. In most cases, it’s best to leave them where they are 🏡

🐣 Is it a nestling (very small, few/no feathers)?
If it’s clearly fallen from a nest and you can safely find it, the best option is to gently return it to the nest if possible 🪺

🚨 When to step in:
• The bird is injured or bleeding
• It is in immediate danger (road, cats, dogs)
• It has been left alone for a long time with no parent activity

In these cases, place it in a warm, quiet, safe box and contact a local wildlife rescue or vet for advice 🏥💙

Important reminders:
❌ Avoid feeding or giving water unless advised by a professional
❌ Don’t assume it’s abandoned — parents are often nearby watching

When in doubt, call for advice 🐾✨

🐾 Allergies in pets: what to look out for 💙

Just like people, pets can suffer from allergies — and they can be uncomfortable if left untreated 🐶🐱

Allergies may be caused by food, pollen, grass, dust mites, or even flea bites 🌿🦟

Common signs include:
• Excessive scratching or licking 🐾
• Red, inflamed skin or rashes 🔴
• Ear infections or head shaking 👂
• Hair loss or sore patches of skin
• Scooting or licking around the bottom 🍑
• Watery eyes or sneezing 🤧

Some pets show seasonal flare-ups, while others may have year-round symptoms 📅

Why early support matters:
Untreated allergies can lead to ongoing discomfort, skin infections, and reduced quality of life 🏥💔

Treatment may include:
💊 Medication to control itching and inflammation
🧴 Medicated shampoos or skin care
🍽️ Special diets for food allergies
🪲 Effective flea control to rule out parasite-related irritation

If you notice any of these signs, give us a call on 01353 658333 or head to our website to book an appointment with a vet so we can help find the cause and create a treatment plan 💙🐾

🪰 Flystrike: a serious risk for rabbits 🐰⚠️

Flystrike is a life-threatening condition that can affect rabbits, especially during warmer months ☀️

It happens when flies lay eggs on a rabbit’s skin or fur — usually where it is soiled or damp. These eggs hatch into maggots very quickly and can cause severe damage in a short space of time 🐛

Early signs to watch for:
• Sudden restlessness or unusual behaviour 😟
• Strong, unpleasant smell 👃
• Damp or dirty fur around the rear end 🚽
• Flies gathering around your rabbit 🪰
• Lethargy or hiding more than usual 🏠

Flystrike can progress extremely quickly, so it’s always an emergency 🚨

Prevention is key:
🧼 Keep your rabbit clean and dry
🍽️ Ensure a healthy, high-fibre diet to reduce messy droppings
🏡 Check your rabbit at least twice daily
🛡️ Use vet-recommended fly protection during warmer months

If you ever suspect flystrike, contact us immediately on 01353 658333 — do not wait 💙

💉🐾 Why are vaccinations so important for your pet?

Vaccinations are one of the simplest ways to protect your pet from serious — and sometimes life-threatening — diseases.

Even if your pet seems healthy, vaccines help build immunity and prevent the spread of illness within the wider pet community 🐶🐱

✨ Vaccinations help to:
• Protect against dangerous diseases
• Prevent outbreaks in the local pet population
• Reduce the risk of costly treatments later
• Keep your pet safe as they explore the world

Puppies and kittens need a full course to get started, but regular boosters throughout life are just as important to maintain protection.

Not sure if your pet is up to date?
