⭐️ In more exciting news every collection point now has their own QR code to use on rehoming days! Let's be honest, there's a high risk of chicken maths happening on rehoming days 😏. Instead of having to remember to donate for your additional hen(s) when you get home you can simply scan our QR code and it'll take you directly to our donation page, all you need to do is enter your name and payment details. We are still happy to accept cash ⭐️

🐔 I don't even know what to say about this one 😞 Thank goodness the amazing FSFH volunteers discovered her (and all of her sisters!) and were able to remove the ginormous toe ball! 🐔

Fresh Start for Hens are proud of our policy of never leaving a hen behind.

If you've ever kept poultry, you'll know hens are the most inquisitive of birds and frequently go places they shouldn't be!

Once we had visibly emptied the barn yesterday, we could still hear some gentle clucking. Cue pulling up the flooring, where we found a number of birds who had clearly been living down there for a while, surviving on broken eggs, spilled feed and drops of water.

With a barn full of noisy hens, the farmer would not have known they were there!

It was only the silence that we had created that let their little voices be heard.

A mixture of dry soil and wet faeces/spilled egg/dripped water in a confined space (difficult to preen) had caused quite a build up around some of their feet and legs! We have seen this before, but nothing as large as this!

Volunteers got to work with pliers, an adjustable wrench and a very large tree pruner and freed this little one of the build up that hampered her movement. Needless to say, she delighted in tucking into EVERY tasty snack she was offered on her journey back to our volunteer, Sarah's house, where she's being pampered and living the free life she deserves ❤️
