We are open to riders of all ages and abilities, teaching in dressage and show jumping in our lovely 30x60m arena. We follow the same values as St Teresa’s School, including the belief that there is no ‘one size fits all’ and that indiv

iduals, both human and equine, should be treated as such. Our horses, our riders and our coaching staff are all unique in their backgrounds, skills and experience, and we take great care to fit the horse to the rider and coach appropriately. Operating 12 months of the year, 7 days a week: 6 days a week with the STE horses and ponies, and those with their own ponies stabled off-site may bring them to the school to use the facilities on Sundays. We run private and semi-private lessons all year round, and Pony Days and onsite competitions in the holidays. STE is a BHS approved riding school, as well as a Pony Club Centre and avid participants of the NSEA (National Schools Equestrian Association). Eventers Challenge Championships - Hickstead Championship report

The Eventers challenge classes consist of both showjumps and arena cross country fences meaning the horse and riders have to be both careful over the showjumps and bold over the cross country fences. These classes are huge in competitor numbers and the courses technical to negotiate.

Although the teams did not come in the placings, Molly M went clear in the 70 cm class at her very first school championships as did Harri L in the 80cm class and Ivy M in both the 70 and 80 cm classes. Amber B's pony flew round but had a couple of poles down and Olivia S rode extremely determinedly in both her classes. Rosie C also did a very good job! Really well done to all of them!

Inter County Dressage Championships Report from Hickstead

The dressage team consisting of Lottie B, Molly M and Antonia S had earlier in the year been crowned Surrey County Champions and although Antonia couldn't join the team at the championships, Rosie C and Olivia S kindly stepped up to make a team of 4. They all rode really well, It was Molly and Lottie’s first dressage championships and first time competing at a higher level for Rosie and Olivia. They just missed out on the placings this time but there is lots of potential for the future!

We are so very proud and excited to report the very best of news from the NSEA Hickstead Championships (23rd-25th May).

These NSEA Championships bring together the very best competitors from schools from all over the UK that have qualified for Inter County Showjumping and Dressage as well as the Eventers Challenge Championships.

As I'm sure you are all aware, the weekend saw temperatures in excess of 30 degrees which makes competing in any outdoor sport difficult but with equestrian sport it is even more challenging as the needs of the horses must be met as well as the riders. The girls all rode beautifully, rose to the diverse challenges that championships undoubtedly present and always put their horse's welfare before their own.

Tennis rackets can be neglected whilst the athlete cools down, horses must be attended to first no matter how hot and thirsty the rider is!

Inter County Showjumping Championships

Antigonie S rode a fantastic and skilful clear and fast round to win the top spot and has been crowned the 1.10 M Inter County Champion. This really is the very top of individual NSEA showjumping and an absolutely amazing achievement.

The 1M team ( Rosie C, Harri L, Antonia S and Antigonie S) riding at the highest team level, rode tactically and brilliantly round a very well built but testing course to come second and were Reserve Intercounty Champions.

To give a little more perspective, these Championships are contested by schools from the whole of the UK. To qualify for the Inter County Championships they had to first win the title of Surrey County Champions back in November by competing against all other schools in Surrey and then compete against the winners of all the other counties in the UK at these Championships.

Hickstead Elite 1M Showjumping Championships.

In this Championship the same team also came second, to be Reserve Champions but literally missed the winning spot by 0.28 of a second!! They were extremely fast round a very big track.

To qualify for the Hickstead Elite Championships they had to be placed 1st or second at a very limited number of hotly contested qualifiers.

These two team results are at the very top level of team NSEA showjumping and absolutely amazing achievements.

Showjumping Qualifiers

Alongside the Championship classes, the NSEA run qualifiers for the National Championships in October.

Florence B made her debut riding her new pony Tommy and rode two lovely clear rounds at 70 and 80 cm.

Antonia S and Antigonie S jumped in the 1.10 class for a very daring and fast win from Antonia and second place for Antigonie respectively. This qualified them both not only for the National Championships but also the Hickstead Elite 1.10 Individual Finals at Hickstead in June.

What a weekend! I can't express enough how proud I am of the girls who not only pulled off these exceptional results but who unfalteringly supported each other not only through the celebrations but also the challenges they faced over the weekend.

Please do join me in celebrating their successes, they really deserve it!

Bobby showing off his new haircut to help keep him cool 😎
We will be continuing our holiday activities as planned this week, with a focus on the slower paces to keep everyone comfortable. All our horses and ponies are having regular cold showers to stay cool after exercise.
Please make sure all riders are dressed appropriately in suitable riding trousers and a t-shirt that covers their shoulders. Please bring water bottles and suncream also for pony May days

We are very happy to say we have heard from the vet this afternoon and we DO NOT HAVE STRANGLES!

The pony received a gutteral pouch swab this morning and we got the results back this afternoon that he was negative for strangles.

Big thanks to Nova Equine Vets and Liphook hospital for being so quick and efficient getting the pony swabbed and results back.

UPDATE: We have confirmation from our vet that we DO NOT HAVE STRANGLES AT ST TERESA’S EQUESTRIAN.

The pony received a gutteral pouch test this morning and we have received a negative test result.

Big thank you to Nova equine and Liphook for being so efficient.

Dear all,

We want to inform everyone that one of our ponies has had a blood test which came back positive for the strangles antibodies.

This means he has been exposed to the virus at some point but does not necessarily have the disease and very likely doesn’t. He will be having further tests on Monday to confirm if he does or doesn’t carry strangles.

Strangles is a highly contagious equine disease and it is important that we observe biosecurity measures to ensure that our horses continue to be healthy and if it is found that we do have the virus, that it is contained to the yard and not spread to other yards.

The pony in question has been with us for 5 months and is in good health with no symptoms of the virus. He was tested only as precaution as he was due to move to a different yard soon and he has not been in any riding lessons since February.
All our other horses are also in good health with no symptoms.

We are working closely with our vet to make sure that the safety of our horses, clients, staff, and anyone visiting the centre is to the highest standard. As per their advice we are taking all our horses’ temperatures twice daily and monitoring them closely.
As a precautionary measure we will be closed to all visiting horses and arena hires for the next week until we have further test results.

Lessons will continue as usual this week, as we are self-contained and none of our horses will leave the site. Please observe all our usual biosecurity measures carefully - washing hands, changing clothing between yards, cleaning footwear - and we will be able to continue to enjoy our horses without interruption whilst we await the next test result.

Strangles cannot be transmitted to humans.
The symptoms of strangles include a high temperature, lethargy, thick yellow mucus from the nose, swollen lymph nodes that may abscess.

Please get in touch if you have any concerns - [email protected].

Thinking of loaning your horse for a year or more to St Teresa’s Equestrian? An owner’s perspective

"When my daughter headed off to university in 2016, she had no hesitation in recommending that her clever competition pony, then aged 16, “semi-retire” to St Teresa’s to teach the girls there.

The STE staff, volunteers and of course the pupils all love the horses and look after them as if they are their own. The team maintain a regular routine for the yard, and all horses get plenty of field time all year round, whatever the weather. Most are out at night, all year, well-rugged, in small groups with friends, whilst a few more sensitive souls are in at night - it’s always whatever works for the individual horse.

Routine shoeing, dentist, physio, saddler, and any regular medications are all dealt with smoothly and professionally. Owners’ specialist farrier, physio, vet etc are all welcome, as well as the yard ones.

The instruction is top class and it’s mostly 30-minute private lessons with hand-picked and super-patient BHS qualified instructors - and the careful use of the big arena ensures there are no “tracked” arena surfaces.

As well as giving private lessons, all are regularly lunged, long reined, hacked and schooled to a good standard, in whatever combination works for them. Several have both a dressage saddle and a GP/jump saddle - and individual preferences are respected.
So their working life with STE usually has them better schooled and a better weight and shape when they’ve been there 6 months or more, than when they arrived!

St T's Equestrian is a good home for a horse who is sound, needs a job to do, and would enjoy a varied working life. You’ll have a signed contract with the school to give you a 30 day return if you need your horse back (for any reason or none) or if your horse isn't happy there. You can visit any day of the year, when the yard is open (usually 7.30am - 7.30pm term-times, 7.30 to 5.30 weekends and holidays), and you can have the yard manager’s mobile number and they’ll have yours, 24/7, if you want that.

It won't suit every horse or pony, or every owner - but if you’re thinking “what will I do with... [my child’s pony] [my older riding club horse] [while I take a year out] [while I’m working two jobs] [while I’m pregnant] [while I get my kids to school age] [while I’m caring for elderlies] [while I sort out my house move] " - think of loaning to STE. There are vacancies at all heights 13.2 to 16hh right now - go for a visit, see the facilities, and meet the team for yourself.

We are very excited to share with you that our NSEA team had some amazing results at last Sunday's qualifier at Coombelands Equestrian Centre.

Combined Training

Harriet L, Lilly S, Olivia S and Rosie C formed our two combined training teams competing at preliminary dressage and show jumping heights from 80cm to 1M.

In combined training, the horses and riders are judged first on their dressage and then go on to a showjumping round, the penalties from both being combined for the final result.

The intermediate team won and the open team came second.
Not only fantastic results for themselves but for both teams therefore securing their places at the National Championships in October.

In the individual sections, Lilly came third in the 80cm, Rosie won the 90cm, Olivia came third in the 90cm and Harriet fourth in the 1M.
These results give the girls individual qualifications in addition to the team ones for the Championships.

Regional Points League Showjumping

Ivy M rode super fast clear rounds on her pony Teddy to come 3rd in the 80 cm and 4th in the 90cm. Both these results gain her individual qualifications for the RPL Championships at Hickstead in August.

Rosie C also rode a fantastic debut clear round on her new horse Blue, finishing 8th overall, a great result.

LOOKING FOR LOAN HORSES
5* loan home offered for your much-loved pony or horse.

Preferably 8 years+, no upper age limit, and 13.2 hands to 16 hands that can comfortably take beginner/novice up to intermediate/advanced riders.

Suitable for school work and pole work at our beautiful riding school attached to St Teresa’s School, Effingham, near Dorking in the Surrey Hills.

We are BHS/ABRS approved and have a 5* council licence.
To have up to date vaccinations, dentistry, worming etc, recently fitted tack and rugs on arrival.

Will have a mutually agreed loan contract in place.

• Must be safe to ride and handle, enjoy working, and be sound.
• Lovely facilities including airy American Barn stabling and a well-maintained sand-and-fibre (Combi-ride) 60m x 30m arena.
• Kind, qualified and experienced staff that manage and work the horses and ponies, incl. hacking, long reining, lungeing and schooling, with a high staff-to-horse ratio to allow for this.
• Qualified and experienced instructors to teach our students, usually in private lessons.
• 365 days a year turnout, either day or night turnout as required, individually, in pairs, or small groups.
• Adlib forage, feed and vit/min supplement provided by us.
• Regular visits from qualified professionals - saddler, chiropractor/physio, dentist, farrier and veterinary care such as vaccinations, worm testing and wormers at the riding school's cost.

Our ethos for our staff and students is that each horse's welfare always comes first; most quirks and individual feed regimes can be accommodated, and we are happy to work closely with our owners to ensure that each horse is cared for as an individual.

The owners of our current horses will happily recommend us, as will our vet, physio, dentist, saddler and farrier.
