The Angus Glens Moorland Group is a collection of rural estates throughout Angus, founded in 2015. This includes conservation of rare heather moorland and the wildlife which lives there.

🥂 12 glorious jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ Hospitality & Tourism

A perfect example of how the shooting industry goes hand in hand with hospitality is Glen Doll Lodge & Cottage.
Proudly welcoming stalking guests year after year — many of whom return season after season.
Their DB&B package not only gives them a warm Highland experience, but also supports the local economy by creating 4 jobs and employing local ghillies and staff.

A real boost for the local community on and around the moors!

🥩 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ BUTCHERS

“The grouse season is integral to the sustainability of local businesses such as Bel's Butchers in Angus.
We rely heavily on the increased business it provides, boosting sales both directly and indirectly within the business, providing extra local employment and creating a ripple effect of increased business throughout the local area.
We supply the estates with butcher meat for the lodges and feed the beaters daily. We benefit from the visitors who travel to the glens for grouse shooting as they often visit our shops prior to heading home.
Not only do we supply directly to the sporting estates, but we also process a large volume of game throughout the year for these estates to use privately, and for sale within my business, both wholesale and retail.
Communities like ours will struggle to survive without the trade that grouse shooting brings. We must stive to safeguard the longevity of this sport for the sake of all those living and working within rural communities such as ours.”

👨🏻‍🔧12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ MACHINE HIRE AND MECHANICS

Businesses such as GWT Plant Hire provide estates with access to essential machinery, from diggers and quads to trailers and ATVs - used for everything from track repairs and transport to habitat management.
The increased activity during the shooting season creates steady demand for plant hire, fuelling local income and keeping these small businesses viable in remote areas.

Mechanical support is equally important. Estates rely on local mechanics to keep shoot vehicles in working order, often at short notice. Whether it’s repairing Argocats, maintaining beaters’ trailers, or servicing pick-up trucks, this work ensures shoot days run smoothly and safely, especially in challenging weather or terrain.

The shooting season provides a reliable stream of work for businesses like GWT and local workshops, supporting skilled jobs and helping maintain the infrastructure that benefits not just field sports, but wider land management.

🌲 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ TIMBER BUSINESS

“Rosehill Timber is a third generation local family run business. We have benefitted from the custom of the local estates for many years. The grouse season contributes to our business throughout the year and helps to keep 25 local people in jobs at the sawmill.”

🎾 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ GUNDOG TRAINING

“My love of dog training started as a child, helping my dad train his gundogs, as he had done with his own father. Now I share my passion with my children.

I have a mixed team of labradors and spaniels, most of which I have bred myself. Training a dog is a lifelong commitment and doesn't stop once it has mastered the basics; every dog is an individual and even the time it takes to achieve the basics can vary hugely.

The best satisfaction comes from working the dogs on shoot days, when hopefully, all that training clicks into place and you and your dog can work in partnership, listening to each other and understanding the other.

Financially, I earn a wage working my dogs on shoot days, as well as an income from stud fees or from the sale of puppies when I have an occasional litter to keep one myself.”

🧺 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ HOUSEKEEPER

“My team and I are kept busy all year round between the fishing and shooting seasons.
I work within the glorious Angus Glens, If I wasn’t lucky enough to work where, I would need to travel further a field, with high travel costs.
The extra flexibility within this role is fantastic as I’m able to work around my youngest son.
So all in all I am extremely appreciative for the sporting industry and all it offers to myself, my family and the local community.”

🐾 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ PICKING UP

“From the 12th of August onwards I spend the shooting season picking up with my trusty team of labradors on several shooting estates within the Angus glens. A productive grouse year can see my number of days out in the field increase to over 100 days of work per shooting season.”

Harriet Fruish - Mistralwren Gundogs

Pickers-up play a key role in ensuring that all shot birds are quickly retrieved, and enter the game supply chain in good condition. This not only supports ethical shooting but also contributes to food quality and traceability.

For local people, picking-up also offers valuable seasonal income and a chance to work outdoors with their dogs.

Well, this is a first!

After a super hot day on the hill, one of our estates treated the whole team to ice cream … not in a shop, not in a cafe or even in a town 🍦

What a way to end the day!

✂️ 12 Glorious Jobs for the Glorious 12th ~ TAILOR

High-quality tailoring plays an important role in preparing for the shooting season!
Well-fitting, durable tweeds and outdoor clothing are not just part of tradition—they’re essential for comfort, safety, and practicality on the hill.

Renowned names like Campbells of Beauly supply and maintain classic shooting attire for many across the region, offering garment tailoring and made to measure options. Their work supports local craftsmanship and keeps alive the long-standing connection between tailoring and field sports.

Without the regular flow of business generated by field sports, the demand for this kind of specialist clothing and skilled maintenance would likely decline. Putting at risk not only local jobs, but also a tradition of craftsmanship.
