Today is World Kidney Day! Did you know 20-50% of cats over the age of 15 have some degree of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?
You can help maintain the health of your cat's kidneys by encouraging hydration. While it may seem difficult to get your cat to drink more, here are a few tips that may help keep your cats well hydrated. 💧
1. Ensure your cat likes their water bowl. Cats tend to prefer glass or ceramic bowls over plastic or stainless steel ones due to the taste. Make sure the bowl is wide and shallow (so their whiskers don't touch). Cats also prefer their resources to be separate. Placing the water bowl (or bowls, preferably) away from the food may also help to improve drinking.
2. Cat fountains can be a great option to encourage drinking as most cats love running water.
3. Feeding a wet diet and adding extra water in the food can be a easy way to offer some extra hydration.
