Just a wee reminder…

We've already had a couple of naughty pups snaffle some raisins this week, and they've had to come in for emergency vom jag 💉🤮 followed by activated charcoal ⚫

🍇Raisins and grapes contain a toxin which can cause acute kidney failure in dogs and cats. The toxicity is idiosyncratic - that means it is not dependent on the dose (amount) eaten, and some could eat lots of raisins/grapes/current/sultanas and be fine, whereas others could eat two tiny raisins with catastrophic effects.

Please keep the mince pies, panettone, and christmas pudding away from your pets, and if they have managed to snaffle ANY then bring them in to us asap!

Defender Burghley Horse Trials is always a thrilling event. I watched from my sofa this time but wonderful to see some of my friends in the top 10 after a very tricky XC. 3rd was Zaragoza by my beloved Cevin Z, 5th was Chilli Knight by the sweetest stallion, Chilli Morning, and great to see Alex Bragg in the top 10, giving Quindiva a beautiful ride and WFP saying "Alex shows how it's done!"

Thrills and spills on the XC today. We were judging a tricky fence this morning, log followed by corner that even caused Ros Canter a run out. This afternoon we moved to a straightforward gate. Ian Stark is 71 and still riding XC at 4* level! Incredible. And I got a nice shot of world no 1 Tom Mcewan.

Wonderful news for eventing in Scotland. I’m fence judging at Defender Blair Castle International Horse Trials this weekend and was so sad that this is to be the last event held there. However, I’m sure Scone Palace will do us proud.

Scone Palace is proud to announce, in partnership with British Eventing, that it will host a new CCI4*-L horse trials event from August 2025 – the Scone Palace International Horse Trials.

Earlier this year it was confirmed that the 35th annual Blair Castle International Horse Trials, being held later this week, would be the final such event at the venue. Since that decision was announced, Scone Palace has engaged with the sport to bring a new major event to Perthshire.

The first Scone Palace International Horse Trials will be held next August in the historic and picturesque Parklands of Scone Palace and the adjacent Perth Racecourse, offering a unique and enhanced setting for this new world-class event. The establishment of this equestrian competition at this iconic location reinforces Perthshire's status as a premier destination for international sporting events and ensures the continuation of top-tier eventing in the region.

Interesting article on the importance of gut health in foals as a predictor of lifelong performance. Horses are hind gut fermenters and need yeast (saccharomyces species) in their microbiome. And it needs to survive the stomach and small intestine to be useful.

Scientists found gut microbes in a young foal directly correlate to long-term health and performance.

The Competition and Markets Authority is going to investigate the veterinary sector (at last). Over half of UK practices are owned by just 6 businesses, reducing choice and focused on profit. There are also questions over pet owners being given informed choice of treatment and pricing transparency

The CMA has today confirmed its decision to launch a market investigation into the veterinary sector and published tips to help pet owners struggling with vet costs now.
