Josee's Happy Hounds Hello, my name is Josee, I am a qualified clinical animal behaviourist and certified dog trainer

I am a qualified clinical animal behaviourist and a certified dog trainer. My main passion is working with owners to help improve their quality of life, as well as their dog’s. As a mum of three young children, I can fully emphasise with how busy life can get and how difficult it can be to make time to work on our dog’s behaviour issues. To help with this, I provide training and behaviour plans th

at take into account the individual needs and abilities of the client and their dog. I do this through using the most up-to-date research in dog behaviour and training. My sessions also provide owners with the opportunity to have a relaxed and open chat about their dog’s behaviour without the fear of being judged or criticised.

I love this quote from Helen Mort's book 'Never leave the dog behind'.

For me walks with Mossy are my favourite part of sharing my life with a dog.

I love having her in the car with me and I love silently walking together...we are fully connected and sharing the experience but also enjoying the walk in our own way.

I had so much fun at the first group play session today...very muddy fun! This is going to be a monthly session for anyone who has completed my puppy or adolescent package to book into, as long as there are no fear or reactivity issues.

It is a relaxed session where the dogs can play while we have a chat about reading body language and how to know that play is OK. It is also a great space for practicing recall around distractions and having a chat with other likeminded people about training and behaviour.

I hope everyone enjoyed the session and I am looking forward to next month! :)

I have been working with quite a few reactive dogs over the past month and it is something that lots of people struggle with. It is also one of my favourite behaviour issues to work with because it can make such a difference to the caregiver and the dog's life once they understand what is affecting the reactivity and have a clear plan of how to move forward. That is why I have created this free resource with 6 steps for working with your reactive dog x

I had such an amazing session this morning working with the lovely Ozzy and his human...even Mossy came along to help and she did so well! Who would have thought that my previously reactive adolescent dog could end up being a good teacher too! This was the second session of the adolescent training package and I was amazed by Ozzy's progress...a true credit to all the effort his humans have been putting in 💜

Does your dog like to chase squirrels or any other animal??

For someone with a low prey drive dog this video might seem very boring BUT it is actually the result of lots of training! Before this Mossy’s recall would have been a disaster if off lead or she would have started barking and whining if on lead. It would then take her a while to calm down and be able to listen to any training cues.

Now I can get her to stop and watch the squirrel (which gives me time to pop her lead on!) and she is allowed to keep watching until she is ready to disengage and calmly move on.

If your dog’s prey drive is making your walks stressful and affecting their recall and ability to listen then get in touch to chat about how I can help x

We have heard about building resilience in our kids but do we need to do that with our puppies too?

YES! Resilience is about being able to bounce back from stressful situations. Stress if a normal part of life and it is something that our puppies need to learn how to cope with.

So this is about socialisation and that means we need to expose them to lots of new experiences? No…building resilience and socialising only happens if our puppies feel safe and we pair new experiences with positive outcomes.

This is why I have created this free resource with some easy tips on how to start building resilience in your puppy.

If you are struggling with being able to read your puppy or understanding if their needs are being met then get in touch to chat about how I can help x

Did you know that dogs are not pack animals? You might be surprised to hear that considering it is something that we are told constantly by other owners, on social media and by some celebrity tv dog trainers BUT if you actually look at the facts it is just not true or helpful...dogs are not pack animals 💜

Dogs are not pack animals, as much as the myth tries to perpetuates itself through our media.⠀

It’s important to understand this because this myth of dogs being pack animals sometimes leads to actions that can be harmful for our dogs. ⠀

For example:⠀
🔹 Making dogs go on large group “pack walks” where dogs are wearing aversive equipment and have no way of creating space from one another, and are therefore being flooded.⠀
🔹 Thinking we need to exert “dominance” or be the “alpha” by using aversive corrections, “alpha rolling”, and being intimidating when that actually just makes us look like a bully to our dog.⠀
🔹 Labels like “alpha” and “dominant” leads us to think that dogs behave the way they do for some higher purpose or to defy us and this causes us to use aversive methods and intimidate them to “put them in their place”.⠀

So, how should we think about our relationship with our dogs if we’re not a “pack”?⠀
🤝 You and your dog are a team that works together and understands each other the best you can without the need for threats.⠀
🤝 You and your dog are a family and as your family, you’ll help your dog feel safe and feel safe around you.⠀
🤝 You and your dog are sentient beings with your own needs and desires and you can absolutely work together to meet those needs and wants.⠀
🤝 You are a teacher and your dog is your learner and it’s on you to teach your dog what you’d like them to do and reward them for it every step of the way so they really learn what you want.⠀

It’s time for us to ditch this outdated theory and myth and really work towards a better, more understanding, and more compassionate relationship with our dog. ⠀

ID: Curved text on top says “Dogs are not pack animals”. In the middle is a cartoon graphic of a woman and a dog on her lap. There are 4 bubbles with text in them that say from right to left: “Dogs form loose associations with one another!”, “There is no fixed hierarchy in dog-dog relationships”, “Your dog knows you’re not a dog.”, and “You don’t have to be the “alpha”/“pack leader”.

***MINI MOUNTAIN WALK FOR KIDS AND DOGS***

There are so many great places to walk around Edinburgh (Newhailes, Dalkeith Country Park, Gore Glen Woodland, the Hermitage of Braid, the Pentlands, Costorphine Hill) I could post all year! But for my last kid friendly dog walk post it has to be my favourite mountain walk...which is just the perfect size for little human legs and dogs!

Ben A'an is based in the Trossachs and is a mini mountain at 461 metres high. It is a short steep climb up to the top and then you follow the same path back down. It took us around 2 hours to do it and it was so much fun! There are loads of great climbing opportunities and a car full of tired and happy trekkers on the way home.

Because it is quite steep it isn't for little puppy legs but once your dog is fully grown, and their growth plates have closed, then I would definitely recommend the trip...I'm sure it is even more enjoyable without kids! 😆

If you have any good suggestions for kid friendly dog walks then let me know...I love exploring new places and having an excuse to get the kids and Mossy out the house!

I love this article! Yes dogs are not children but they deserve and need the same amount of respect, empathy and understanding as we would give to our kids 💜

When a toddler keeps grabbing our favourite ornament we put it on a higher shelf.

When we have a baby crawling around we keep bleach out of low cupboards or put locks on the door.

When dogs chew peoples things or eat out of the bin, they are often told off and the ornament and bin stay in the same place so they can just get told off all over again.

When a child cries we comfort them, we may give them an ice cream so they dont find the thunderstorm so scary.

When a dog barks out of fear they often have their lead yanked and are shouted at. If we give them food we are told we are rewarding for bad behaviour. If they cry they are often ignored.

Humans make mistakes on a regular basis and tell themselves it's ok, mistakes happen.

If dogs make mistakes they are often called stupid, bad, naughty.

Humans never behave appropriately and politely 100% of the time.

Dogs are, on the whole, way more polite than people but often get shouted at for not behaving more human.

Humans struggle to change behaviours of their own that they dont like and spend most of there lives seeking ways to manage their emotions and change how they act.

Dogs as a species have way less behaviour issues than humans but dogs are expected to change their behaviour in 1 session with a trainer.

Humans are one of the most aggressive animals on the planet. They manipulate each other, abuse each other and physically hurt each other regularly.

Dogs are way less aggressive than people as a species. You are way more likely to get hurt or killed by another human. Infact it is more likely that a child will get killed by thier own parents than a dog. And yet we muzzle dogs just for the way they look.

No, dogs are not humans and shouldnt be treated as such. But they do feel happiness, sadness, fear, excitement, love, pain. They do think and have a sense of self.

New laws are being looked at in spain to try and change the way we see animals. Spain is often seen to be behind the times in the way they think of animals and sentience. And I agree, these laws are essential in starting to change the way people think.

But I see puppy farms and dogs with awful health issues being bred for the sole purpose of money. I see dogs seen as accessories more than thinking feeling members of the family. I see people putting their material objects way higher up on the list than their dogs welfare. I see people putting hugely high expectations on their dogs and still using punishment to 'teach' them. It is not just one country that needs to reassess the way they look at dogs.

We choose to have dogs in our lives. They do not choose to have us. Relationships are not made in Disney land. They can be hard, frustrating, emotional, and require compromise and sacrifice. But dogs deserve more from the human race than they are being given. They need us to see them as they really are and not how the human ego shapes them.

If you have a dog that likes to chase toys and have a few spare minutes then fill in this survey 😊

This is a message from my colleague, Hannah Walker, MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour at The University of Edinburgh.
“Hi everyone! Please could you help me with my research? I am in the final stages of my Master’s degree in Clinical Animal Behaviour. My dissertation research will be investigating the relationship between engagement in object-chase games (eg. fetch) and dog behavioural characteristics. Please enter whether your dog chases objects or not. The survey is anonymous and your responses will be invaluable to my research. I would really appreciate if you could fill out the survey and/or share it around. Many thanks!"
