Meet Morag, Lemon and Binx 🐾

Like most cats, they absolutely love finding the warmest spot possible to relax ☀️ Whether it’s stretched out in the garden, snoozing on a windowsill, or curled up in a sunny patch on the floor, they could sunbathe for hours!

But during extreme heat, even our sun-loving cats can become too hot very quickly, so it’s important to help keep them cool and safe.

Here are some tips to help protect your cats in warm weather:

🐱 Make sure they always have access to fresh, cool water
🌳 Provide shaded, cool areas indoors and outdoors
🧊 Cooling mats or damp towels can help them stay comfortable
🏠 Keep rooms ventilated and close blinds/curtains during the hottest part of the day
🥣 Wet food can help increase hydration during hot weather
🚫 Never leave pets in conservatories, sheds, or hot rooms without airflow
🔥 Watch for signs of heatstroke such as panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, wobbliness, or difficulty breathing

Cats are very good at hiding when they’re unwell, so keeping an eye on them during hot weather is really important ❤️

If your pet is showing signs of heatstroke, please call our team on 0131 669 3790

This is Nyka 🐾

Nyka is a husky… although Nyka doesn’t realise she’s a husky!
Her favourite pastime is relaxing in her special spot in the garden, soaking up the sunshine and sunbathing whenever the weather is nice ☀️

While she absolutely loves the heat, her humans have to be extra careful. Due to her thick double coat, Nyka can get hot very quickly, especially during extreme temperatures.

Here are some important tips to help keep your dog safe in warm weather:

🐶 Always provide access to fresh, cool water
🌳 Make sure they have shaded areas to rest
🚶 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
🚗 Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes
🧊 Cooling mats, paddling pools, or damp towels can help keep them comfortable
🔥 Watch for signs of heatstroke such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse
👋Do the 5 second palm test! If the ground is too hot for your hand this means it is too hot for those little paw paws.

Remember — dogs can overheat much faster than we do, so please keep your furry friends safe during this hot weather ❤️

We see a variety of species at Abercorn! Our exotics nurse Rachel works closely with vets Caitlin and James to provide our small mammal referral service! This allows other practices to transfer more complex cases to us to provide a whole host of surgical, dental, anaesthetic and diagnostic imaging to a variety of species. We are also happy to see chickens, small birds and small reptiles.

The Best Part of the Day? The Toy Box! 🧸🐶

Vet nursing is not only about clinical care — it’s also about making our patients feel safe, comfortable, and stress-free during their visit.

This very happy waggy-tailed patient got to choose a toy from the nurses’ special toy box before surgery to help make their stay a little less scary and a lot more fun.

Providing comfort, enrichment, and positive experiences can make a huge difference to a patient’s recovery and overall wellbeing — and sometimes a squeaky toy is just what the vet ordered. 🐾

And as much as they might act like they’ve had a dramatic day when they’re collected… it’s usually been nowhere near as scary as they made it out to be! 😉

“I’m not dramatic… I just had a very important day.” 🐶

Recovery Room Bunny Cuddles 🐰💚

Monitoring patients after their procedures is a hugely important part of veterinary nursing, and our nurses keep a very close eye on every patient as they recover from anaesthesia.

Here’s Nurse Shauna keeping watch over this adorable bunch of cuties after their neutering procedures. 🐰

During recovery, nurses carefully monitor temperature, heart rate, breathing, pain levels, and comfort — making sure each patient wakes up safely, stays warm, and gets plenty of reassurance (and cuddles!) along the way.

Recovery nursing is all about patience, observation, and making sure our patients feel as safe and comfortable as possible after surgery. 💚

Behind Every Successful Surgery 🛠️🐾

Long before a patient enters theatre, the nursing team is hard at work behind the scenes preparing for surgery. Vet nurses are responsible for cleaning, sterilising, and carefully checking every surgical instrument to make sure everything is perfectly prepared and ready for the veterinary surgeons.

Each surgical pack is assembled with precision, ensuring every instrument is sterile, complete, and ready for use — because patient safety is always the top priority.

Living the Vet Nurse Life 💚

More Than Just Cuddles 🐾

Vet nurses use a wide range of clinical skills every single day — including laboratory diagnostics.

Here you can see Nurse Karra carrying out a urinalysis, an important test that helps give us valuable information about a patient’s health. By analysing urine samples, nurses can help identify issues such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, dehydration, bladder crystals, and other underlying medical conditions.

From measuring urine concentration to checking for glucose, protein, blood, and bacteria under the microscope, laboratory work plays a huge role in helping the vets diagnose and monitor patients accurately.

It’s one of the many behind-the-scenes nursing skills that helps ensure our patients receive the best possible care. 🐶🐱🔬

Recovery Room Cuddles 🐶

We work closely with Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, a fantastic charity dedicated to rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs in need.

Here’s Blue from the Dog and Cat Home getting some very well-deserved cuddles from Nurses Jess and Karra while waking up from surgery. 🐾

Making sure patients feel safe, warm, and comforted during recovery is a huge part of veterinary nursing — and sometimes all they need is a gentle cuddle and reassurance. 💙

Say Cheese, Lemon! 💛

Vet nurses are trained in many different skills — including taking dental x-rays!

Here’s Rachel, our Head Nurse, taking dental x-rays of Nurse Shauna’s cat, Lemon, after she chipped one of her teeth.

Dental x-rays help us see what’s happening below the gum line, allowing the team to assess the tooth properly and decide on the best treatment to keep Lemon happy and pain-free. 🐾
