🐾 WELCOME REGGIE 🐾

Reggie has come for his sleepovers 🥰

This sweet boy is a Plummer terrier, ‘developed’ in the 70s by mixing the jack russell, beagle and bull terrier.

Reggie is super loving, enjoys his walkies and so far is only interested in the tennis balls 🤪

Did you know we rotate our toy boxes?

Rotating your dog’s toys is a simple habit that can make a big difference in their mental and emotional wellbeing. Here’s why it’s beneficial:

1. Prevents Boredom

Dogs get used to seeing the same toys every day. When toys are always available, they lose their novelty. Rotating them makes “old” toys feel new again, which keeps your dog more interested and engaged.

2. Boosts Mental Stimulation

When you reintroduce a toy after a break, your dog often interacts with it more enthusiastically. This stimulates curiosity and problem-solving—especially with puzzle or treat-dispensing toys.

3. Reduces Destructive Behavior

Bored dogs are more likely to chew furniture, shoes, or other household items. Keeping toys fresh and exciting can redirect that energy in a positive way.

Sniffing games are basically mental gold for dogs 🐶👃 Here’s why they’re so beneficial:

🧠 Mental stimulation (aka brain workout)

A dog’s sense of smell is insanely powerful—using it engages a huge part of their brain. Sniffing tires dogs out mentally in a way that physical exercise alone often can’t. A 10–15 minute sniffing session can equal a long walk in terms of mental fatigue.

😌 Stress relief & emotional regulation

Sniffing is calming. It lowers heart rate and helps dogs self-soothe, which is why anxious, reactive, or overstimulated dogs often relax when allowed to sniff freely. Think of it like dog meditation.

🧬 Natural, instinct-satisfying behavior

Dogs are wired to forage, track, and investigate scents. Sniffing games let them do what evolution designed them to do—this is deeply satisfying and confidence-boosting, especially for shy or nervous dogs.

🎯 Improves focus & problem-solving

Finding treats or toys through scent builds concentration, patience, and decision-making. This can even carry over into better training because the dog learns how to think instead of just react.

🏡 Great for all ages and abilities

🤝 Strengthens your bond

When you set up sniffing games, you’re collaborating with your dog instead of commanding them. That shared experience builds trust and positive associations with you.

👅 Benefits of Licki Mats for Dogs 👅

😌 Promotes Calm and Relaxation

Licking is a self-soothing behavior for dogs. When a dog repeatedly licks a surface, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of the body responsible for “rest and digest.”
This helps:
• Lower stress and anxiety
• Reduce heart rate
• Create a sense of calm and safety

🧬 Releases Feel-Good Hormones

Repetitive licking triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, the brain’s natural “feel-good” chemicals.
These hormones:
• Improve mood
• Reduce anxiety and frustration
• Help dogs cope with stressful or overstimulating environments

🧠 Provides Mental Enrichment

Licki mats encourage dogs to focus, problem-solve, and engage their brain. Unlike quickly eating from a bowl, licking requires sustained attention.

Mental benefits include:
• Reducing boredom
• Preventing destructive behaviors
• Helping high-energy dogs mentally “wind down”
• Supporting senior dogs who need low-impact enrichment

Mental stimulation is just as tiring—and satisfying—as physical exercise.

🐕 Encourages Natural, Instinctive Behavior

Licking is a natural, instinctive behavior dogs use for comfort, exploration, and bonding (think puppies nursing or dogs grooming themselves).

Providing a safe outlet for this behavior:
• Prevents excessive licking of paws or furniture
• Redirects nervous energy into something healthy
• Builds positive associations with calm environments

❓ Why Licking Is So Calming (In Simple Terms)

Licking works like deep breathing or meditation does for humans:
• Repetitive motion
• Rhythmic focus
• Predictable reward

This combination tells the dog’s brain:
“I am safe. I can relax.”

🎰 Bonus Tip

Use soft, spreadable foods (plain yogurt, pumpkin purée, mashed banana, soaked kibble) especially when frozen for longer-lasting engagement.

For the love of dogs

Alot of people ask me how I got into this line of work. The simple answer? Because I LOVE dogs.

I started out as a foster mum for dogs who wasn’t coping in the kennels in Spain - Spanish Stray Dogs. I had many foster furbabies over the years, all of them I remember fondly. After a short while I started getting requests off friends, and friends of friends asking if I could look after their dogs while they went away. Poochies was born!

It was super hard work for a while. Never running my own business before and not having the first clue where to start! I had a part time job as a sales assistant at a bookmakers and worked my doggy business around that for nearly 2 years. I literally worked 7 days a week 365 days a year. Dont get me wrong, I loved it but I just couldn’t see how my business would work. Ive never been business minded, I was more of a ‘be told what to do and do it’ kind of girl. Luckily I had great friends and Mum who told me to just go for it, and I’m so glad I did. Having full focus and more time to concentrate on what I do best, Poochies has grown to what it is today, and continues to get better and more well known as time goes on. Every day, whether its around Bestwood, the Hobbucks or even in Asda, I get people stopping to talk to me about the dogs. This is what it must feel like to be famous I’m sure! ;)

So thankyou to everyone who believed I could do it and to all my amazing furry clients. Without them I would still be sat behind a desk being miserable.
