☀️ BANK HOLIDAY HEAT WARNING FOR PET OWNERS ☀️
The warm weather may be enjoyable for us, but it can quickly become dangerous for our pets 🐾
Please help keep ALL animals safe this Bank Holiday weekend:
💧 Ensure constant access to fresh, clean water
🌳 Provide shaded, cool, well-ventilated areas
🚫 Never leave pets in cars, conservatories, or enclosed hot rooms
🐾 Walk dogs early morning or later evening only
🔥 Check pavements before walks — hot surfaces can burn paws and feet
🧊 Keep hutches, cages, tanks, and aviaries away from direct sunlight
🐰 Small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs can overheat very quickly — frozen water bottles wrapped in towels and cooling mats can help.
🦜 Birds are sensitive to heat and dehydration — ensure good airflow, shade, and regular fresh water.
🦎 Reptiles still require correct heat gradients, but overheating in tanks can become life-threatening during hot weather — monitor enclosure temperatures closely.
⚠️ Signs of heat stress or heatstroke may include:
• Heavy panting or open-mouth breathing
• Lethargy or weakness
• Drooling
• Collapse or seizures
• Reduced appetite or unusual behaviour
Flat-faced dog breeds, elderly pets, overweight animals, and very young pets are particularly vulnerable.
If you are concerned your pet may be overheating, begin cooling safely and contact your veterinary practice immediately.
Stay safe and enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend ☀️🐶🐱🐰🦜🦎
