☀️ Hot Weather ☀️

Two of my dogs, Nelly & Ivy, being role models in their cooling jackets 😎 Plus Nelly & Prim enjoying some time out on the paddle board. One of our favourite ways to spend our downtime together in the sun ☀️

We hope you and your pets are keeping safe and cool during this hot weather. Here are a few simple ways to help keep your canines comfortable and reduce the risk of something like heat stroke:

- Ensure they always have access to plenty of fresh water
- Use cooling mats
- Cooling jackets, cooling collars, and damp towels can help regulate body temperature
- Splash pads and water-based enrichment activities are great for keeping dogs cool and entertained
- Use fans to improve airflow indoors
- Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day — early mornings and late evenings are best
- Be mindful of hot pavements and tarmac, which can burn paws. Wetting patios or outdoor surfaces can help cool them down if your dog needs to go outside
- If travelling with your dog in the car, make sure the vehicle is cool and well ventilated before they get in

✨ TENS ✨

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a widely used therapeutic modality in equine rehabilitation, primarily utilised for pain management and neuromuscular stimulation. It works by delivering low-voltage electrical impulses through surface electrodes placed on the skin, targeting specific nerves or muscle groups.

TENS is thought to work through two key mechanisms: the pain gate control theory and the stimulation of endogenous opioid release. In addition to pain relief, TENS can also encourage gentle, controlled muscle activation, making it particularly beneficial in the rehabilitation of weakened or atrophied musculature.

As every animal’s needs are individual, it is important to consult with your practitioner to determine whether TENS is the most appropriate treatment option for your animal.

✨ Forelimb Protraction Stretch ✨

This image highlights the key muscles targeted during a forelimb protraction stretch. Incorporating a simple stretch like this into your routine after exercise can have a positive effect on these muscle groups when performed correctly.

As the stretch progresses deeper into adduction, there is an increased focus on the latissimus dorsi muscle.

Key note: This does not represent all of the muscles within the forelimb—there are many others that also contribute to movement and stability.

✨ Did you know? ✨

In both equine and canine anatomy, the thoracic limb is not connected to the axial skeleton by a bony articulation. Unlike humans who have a clavicle (collar bone) forming a skeletal attachment, horses and dogs lack this structure.

Instead, the forelimb is suspended and supported by a complex arrangement of muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues collectively known as the thoracic sling. This system plays a crucial role in stabilisation, shock absorption, and the transmission of forces between the limb and the trunk during movement.

Optimal function of the thoracic sling is therefore essential for efficient locomotion, posture, and overall musculoskeletal health.
