Hi sharing in case any of you can help with bedding xx

Amber hopped onto one of our low storage shelves and alerted us to the fact that it’s empty we need more blankets for the winter!

We are in urgent need of thick, large, cosy blankets for our rescue dogs. Do you have any that you could donate?

Dogs like Amber have fine coats and tend to feel the cold so we use blankets to line their kennels. This helps to keep the dogs snuggly and warm until they finally find their forever home.

If anyone can help our dogs this winter, we would be so grateful. If you can't donate a blanket, please do share the post instead. Thank you!

🐍 Adders 🐍

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of Antivenom stockists across the UK so if you do not have any in stock but need some urgently for a case please call us and we can assist you in obtaining some.

RED WARNING FOR HEAT:

Water is essential for life - in this heat our wildlife will struggle to find clean fresh water especially in residential areas.

Water can be in different size containers as long as there are stones or rocks which allow animals and birds to climb in and out easily so they don’t get stuck. Stones in the water protruding just above the surface of the water will help birds land and drink too.

Avoid placing water bowls close to over handing bushes, branches and bird feeders to avoid them fowling the water. Regularly wash the bowls and allow to air dry before refilling them with fresh water.

Do not put out any other fluids like milk, sugar water, gravy or fizzy drinks, for wildlife.

Wildlife needs shade too so try and build a log pile or convert an old disused rabbit hutch into a shelter.

Plus a foot note: Hedgehogs unlike foxes should not be seen out during the day light, if they are they are in trouble, so secure them and call for help.

There is a wildlife crisis in East Sussex! You can help by donating to our Wildlife Crisis Appeal.

If your dog is bitten by a snake there are a few actions you should take:
1) Did you see the snake? Adders are the only venomous snake in the UK and are recognisable by the dark diamond pattern along their backs.
2) Don't approach the snake yourself.
3) If it was not an adder then there's little to worry about. Make sure the bite area is clean, use an anti-bacterial spray and monitor the dog for a few days in case of infection or shock.
4) If it was an adder then keep the dog as quiet and calm as possible and contact your vet immediately for advice.
If you're not sure what type of snake it was, look for any swelling. Adder bites will quickly develop localised swelling at the bite site.
5) Only administer piriton or other medication on the vets advice as it may interfere with their treatment plan.
