Peddy’s Wild Wagger's

Peddy’s Wild Wagger's Family-run dog training & grooming in Retford. Selected dog walking and walk & train services also available.

One-to-one training & behaviour support, professional grooming, puppy introductions and ultrasonic teeth cleaning. Having always wanted to join the Police within the dog unit, I found out that it was one of the hardest things to get into. At 17 and not being disenchanted, I took the advice of getting experience of life and that I did. I might have got lost along the way, made bad choices, and let

life take over. After 15 years in the corporate world at the same company I was made redundant, however as the saying goes when when life gives you lemons..... rather than chasing that elusive promotion, pay rise, recognition, I chose to do something that I love and found out I'm not bad at (perhaps not how the saying goes). Although sometimes circumstances helps you have that reality check, and lets you re-train and learn new skills (including social media) which is why I am now here. Loving every minute of making the dream become a reality and hopefully you join me on my journey.

Today, our Stan turns 10.

A birthday we were once told he probably wouldn’t live to see.

When Stan was young, we were told he wasn’t expected to make it past his first birthday. Now, at ten, he is living with stage four heart failure, arthritis, elbow dysplasia and hips that have seen better days.

We know exercise carries risks for him, but we have always tried to balance keeping him safe with allowing him to live the life of a dog. He still goes swimming, and his favourite place in the world is the seaside, so we take him whenever we can. Everything is done at his pace, but we want his life to be about more than tablets and veterinary appointments.

Keeping him comfortable takes monthly Librela injections, Metacam and other medication. His care costs more each month than our other three dogs put together.

That is the side of dog ownership people don’t always think about when they bring home a puppy. The older years can mean medication, appointments, difficult decisions, sleepless nights and a lot of expense. It takes dedication, and it is something every owner needs to be prepared for. That and a vet’s that understands what your pups mean to you, so a special thank you should go to Dowding Vets for all the support and care that you have given to Stan, I don’t think there is anyone that hasn’t met him even for just a fuss, without you I’m not sure we would have made it to 10!

But underneath the tablets, injections and creaky joints, he is still Stan.

Clumsy, loveable and quite possibly the world’s only non-retrieving retriever. He is loved by everyone, especially at the vets, where he is usually recognised before I am.

He wanders through life mostly oblivious to what is happening around him, rolls onto his back on any patch of grass while you are trying to walk him and performs his excited little tap dance every teatime.

Every so often, he thinks he has spotted Harry at the other side of the park, uses every bit of energy he has to get there… only to discover it isn’t Harry at all….🤦‍♂️

He wasn’t expected to reach one.

Today, he reaches ten.

Happy 10th birthday, Stan. You have certainly proved everyone wrong.

Things They Never Tell You Before You Get a Dog…

You’ve just paid for a lovely groom.

They’re clean.

They smell amazing.

They look immaculate.

Then Bubs spots the canal…

…and launches himself straight in.

And the worst part? We’re groomers.

At least he was clean for five minutes but wouldn’t have them any other way.

🐾 Welfare Wednesday

Our dogs made today’s decision long before we did…

They’re stretched out on the coolest floor they could find, and they’ve got absolutely no interest in going anywhere.

Your dog doesn’t care if they miss a walk… or even a grooming appointment today.

That might sound like a strange thing for a groomer to say, but hear us out.

During really hot weather, your dog’s welfare comes before the diary.

If it’s simply too hot for a dog to travel comfortably or cope with a groom, we’d much rather rearrange an appointment than ask them to push through it.

The same goes for walks. Missing one isn’t going to undo all your hard work.

A few minutes of training, a puzzle, a sniff around the garden or simply finding the coolest spot in the house is sometimes exactly what they need.

Dogs don’t understand calendars or appointments.

They do understand when they’re too hot and also when we are.

As trainers and groomers, there are times when we have to be their voice. If that means rearranging a groom or suggesting a quieter day because it’s simply too hot, that’s a decision we’ll happily make.

🐾 Training Tuesday

It’s the season of…

“Don’t worry, my dog’s friendly!”

So… I thought I’d try it.

I walked up to a complete stranger, gave them a cuddle and said…

“Don’t worry… I’m friendly!”

Apparently, that’s frowned upon in Aldi …..yet to try other supermarkets!

Looking at this photo, I probably should’ve realised that personal space means very different things depending on whether you’ve got two legs or four!

The truth is, just because a dog is friendly doesn’t mean every other dog wants to say hello.

Some dogs are nervous.
Some are in training.
Some are recovering from an injury.
And some just enjoy their walk without meeting every dog they pass.

A simple “Is it ok if they say hello?” can make all the difference.

Have you heard “Don’t worry, my dog’s friendly!” this summer?

Last week in the PWW diary…

Another week doing what we love from training, to teeth cleaning to grooms.

Here’s a few moments we managed to capture over the last seven days. Not every dog made it onto the camera roll, but every one of them kept us smiling.

Thank you for another great week—we’re looking forward to seeing what this one brings.

Transformation Thursday

This week’s before and after is Edie.

Every dog is different, and every groom is tailored to suit them. For Edie, it was all about a good tidy up while keeping her looking like… well, Edie.

We think she’s looking rather pleased with herself!

How healthy are your dog’s teeth?

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in dogs, but it often develops so gradually that it’s easy to miss.

We’ve put together a few real examples to show how a dog’s mouth can change as plaque and tartar build up over time.

From healthy teeth and gums, through to advanced dental disease, recognising the early signs can make a real difference.

Not every dog with dental disease is suitable for ultrasonic teeth cleaning. Some dogs will need a veterinary dental under anaesthetic before ongoing maintenance is appropriate.

If you’re not sure where your dog’s teeth fit on the scale, feel free to send us a clear photo. We’re always happy to give our opinion and point you in the right direction.

Training Tip Tuesday

One of the most useful things you can teach your dog isn’t a trick.

It’s patience.

A dog that can pause and wait before rushing through a doorway is learning self-control, and that’s a skill they’ll use throughout their life.

Look who’s back…

We first met this gorgeous boy when he came in for his puppy introduction.

Now he’s back for his first groom… where has that time gone?

He was an absolute pleasure from start to finish, and we think he’s grown into a very handsome boy……although still has some more growing to do 😬!!
