Heatstroke in Pets:
What Every Owner Needs to Know

Did you know pets can suffer heatstroke within just 10 minutes on a hot day, with temperatures of even 20 degrees being high for our pets?

Unlike humans, dogs and cats can’t sweat to cool down, making them especially vulnerable in warm weather. Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, larger breeds, and very young, old or overweight pets are all at higher risk.

Heatstroke Warning Signs
🚨 Excessive panting and drooling
🚨 Bright red gums or tongue
🚨 Lethargy and confusion
🚨 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🚨 Collapse or seizures

How to Prevent Heatstroke
☀️ Never leave pets in a parked car – even for a minute!
💧 Ensure constant access to fresh water
🕶️ Walk dogs early in the morning or late evening
🏡 Provide shade or cooling mats indoors
🛑 Avoid excessive exercise on hot days

If your pet shows any signs of heatstroke, act fast:
🚨Move them to a cool, shaded area
🚨Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water
🚨Use a damp towel or cooling mat
(but don't cover them in the towel as this can trap heat)
🚨Wet their fur with cool water, not freezing
🚨Contact a vet immediately
