Jenny Eichner - Equine Centred Promoting a welfare focused approach to horse training and management. Lessons, courses & equine behaviour consultations provided.

Relationship based, fun, stress free & engaging for both horses and horses! About

My name is Jenny Eichner and I practice an Equine Centred approach to management and training of equines; one that puts the horse first. It is my passion to share evidence based knowledge and teach people and their horses in a way that is enjoyable and stress free for both the human and the horse. I like to work res

ponsively with people and horses, adapting the process to meet individual needs and help people reach their goals. It is lovely watching communication and connection grow between horses and humans.

I adopt a Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) approach. I believe in the use of positive reinforcement based approaches and in giving the equines as much control and choice as possible during training and management. It is my belief that through being with horses in this way leads to a better relationship and connection with your horse and is more rewarding for both the horse and the human. Services

Happy new year! I hope this year brings you many chances to gain contentment and peace, both by yourself and with horses.

This year sees my maternity leave continue. Little one is crawling now and generally being incredibly cute!

I'm looking forward to more time for my own horses this year. Current projects include extending current fencing to incorporate a small natural stream into the winter field so my older horse has the option of a water trough up a steep hill where the shelter is and a stream down in the lower area where the grass and natural shelter is. There's one bit that gets quite muddy and slippy and though he will happily come up it when I arrive I'd rather he had multiple options, especially as he gets older. I'm sure they will also both enjoy the novelty of somewhere new to explore as the extended part of the field is primarily woodland.

Weaning time? Controversial post alert! šŸšØāš ļø

Is there a right time and right way to wean a foal?

šŸŽ At 6 months of age the foal's stomach lining is nearly, but not quite ready for a life without milk and within 2 weeks of weaning at this age or earlier, the foal's stomach will most certainly ulcer. If you own a foal, are you prepared for that?

šŸŽ Weaning normally involves the complete separation of mare and foal, gradual or immediate. So we aren't just talking about stopping milk here. We are breaking the most significant attachment bond in a horse's life, before they even get to adolescence - which won't even start until next spring/summer. Do you have a suitable alternative adult to help fill that gap? Attachment bonds provide horses with security which helps them to be confident and better regulate their feelings as they grow up. Horses are adapted to growing up in a family group and naturally leave home by tooing and froing for a bit before they finally leave aged between 18 months and 4 years of age.

šŸŽ Weaning may be accomplished by shutting mare and foal in separate places out of earshot - abrupt weaning. Very stressful. By removing one broodmare at a time from the group - very stressful as who know which mummy will be abducted next? By placing all the foals in one place and the mares in another - at least some degree of group solidarity but still stressful. Day by day separating mare and foal for very short periods usually associated with feed time and reuniting them before they get upset - better but still need to be mindful of foal age and replacement attachment figure. Allow the natural process to run its course.

šŸŽ Weaning can be a significant welfare issue, even when seemingly "normal" practices are followed. Let's recognise stressful weaning practices as a welfare issue and move towards more mare and foal centred practices.

šŸŽ Weaning well sets the foal up to cope with life. Good weaning is an investment in the foal's future

I wrote quite a bit more in my chapter on breeding in the book, Equine Behaviour in Mind edited by Suzanne Rogers

24/7 turn out with access to a field shelter in winter plus plenty of natural tree shelter.

Looking for the right human and horse to join me. In exchange for livery I'm looking for someone to help me look after my 2 horses as I recently had my second baby.

I'm an equine facilitated therapist and an equine behaviourist, both my horses are trained using positive reinforcement and you can find out more about my approach on my website: www.equinecentred.com

Please message me for more details.

I'm delighted to have made a donation from the proceeds of the conference today to Positive Horse Training Spain at Cortijo de Segura!

This charity is run by Claire Waldron and Rachel Bedingfield, it is an equine rehabilitation centre as well as a learning centre, with both online coaching and in person courses (learning holidays) offered where you're able to work with the rescue horses at whatever stage they're at.

I visited the centre in spring 2018 for a learning holiday and really enjoyed my visit and would highly recommend going (when covid restrictions allow)! Not only are they doing great work with the horses they rescue, but they're helping to make a difference for horses all over the world!

A proportion of the profits from the sales of the Positive Equine Conference webinar recordings is donated to this charity so if you're interested in the recordings, please find full details and how to buy here: www.equinecentred.com/conference

If you would like to make a donation directly to Positive Horse Training Spain at Cortijo de Segura or find out more about what they do, you can find their website here: https://www.positivehorsetrainingspain.com/

Happy new year! I wish everyone the best of luck for 2021! Equine Centred will be a bit quiet this year as I'm due to have another baby in March!

In other news, we have just welcomed a new horse here! Prince and his owner joined us this week and they're all settling well together. Bracken is overjoyed to have a new friend though Max is not convinced yet. Here they are in their winter paddock, which is surrounded by natural shelter, ready for the winter together.
