TO SPAY & NEUTER

Understanding the Basics of spaying or neutering

Often, the spay and neuter take place at a very young age for pets, at four to six months. However, studies have shown that this may not be the best age to spay or neuter your dog. The relationship between s*x hormones and canine health was not well-considered and understood decades ago when the early spay/neuter campaigns were started. Today, we are discovering that possibly some of those decisions may have affected the health of some dogs.

Research conducted by the University of California – Davis reveals that for some dog breeds, neutering and spaying may be associated with the increased risks of certain health conditions such as joint disorders including hip or elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate rupture or tear, and some cancers, such as lymphoma, mast cell tumour, hemangiosarcoma, and osteosarcoma.

The research conclusions are not surprising. S*x hormones are important in the development of any animal.

We know they affect psychological development as well as the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and the immune system.

Interestingly though, different breeds and different sized dogs mature at different ages, which means that early spay/neuter may not be bad for all dogs. The wide margin of maturation of dogs varies considerably, as toy breed dogs mature s*xually as early as six to nine months of age whereas large and giant breeds may mature as late as 16-18 months of age.

The end conclusion is that generally, the larger breeds had possibly more to risk in future health conditions in than small or toy breeds of dogs due to early spaying or neutering since they mature at a later age.

Your Role as an Owner
The British & American Veterinary Medical Association “promotes the professional judgment of the veterinarian in developing an informed, case by case assessment of each individual patient, taking into account all the potential risks and benefits of spay/neuter.”

My opinion on the topic is that the best age to spay or neuter should no longer be the standard “six months of age” response that many veterinarians have used as a guideline over the years, but rather tailored to each individual dog, especially if the dog is a large or giant breed. If you have a purebred dog, you should also speak with your breeder, who may be able to provide valuable insight. Then, a discussion with your veterinarian based on your dog’s breed or breed type, s*x, and potential future medical concerns must be had.

An age of six to nine months of age may be appropriate for neutering or spaying a toy breed puppy or small breed puppy but a larger or giant breed may need to wait until they are near or over 18-24 months of age. It is also important to understand that often, the earlier these procedures are done, the easier the surgeries usually are for the veterinarian and recovery for the patient.

The one rule I recommend is to not knowingly spay a female dog while they are going through their heat cycle as that may exacerbate excessive bleeding.

In Conclusion
Spaying and neutering pets remains an important part of the effort to reduce the number of unwanted animals and unnecessary euthanasia in this country. When considering whether to spay or neuter your dog, with today’s information about the possible effects of age at the time of surgery on their future health, it is ideal to have a detailed discussion with your veterinarian and breeder to determine what is best for your dog.

TRAINING YOUR PUPPY

Now you have your pup home training commences the minute she is through the door.

She will most likely already know her name as the breeder will have been calling her by name if already chosen and the word no a lot.

Now give her a day or two to get used to her new surroundings take it a room at a time. Do not overwhelm a pup as it can frighten them.

Pups are nosy creatures by nature hence a room at a time as she is still learning to go potty. Do remember pups need to go every hour including at night every few hours. Make sure your house and garden are puppy proof. So if young ones in the house remove their toys. No ornaments at eye level as these will be eaten for yourselves. Coal fires well any kind of fires have a guard up even when off etc etc.

Now after your Dane has been there for a few days and getting used to you all including visitors as you will have them too. Very much like having a new born baby in the house everyone wants to meet and greet her training begins.

Find a quiet time of the day and begin with stand and stay, You will have a treat to hand for this. Liver cake or cheese are hit in this house for that.

Stand and stay
Stand your puppy and say the command stay do so for 5 seconds and treat. Yes, they wont get it to begin with but will in the end do this every day 2-3 times but always get them to stand first. Build up over the days and by the end of the week it should be 1 minute only and a pup always wants to please you. Build on this every week and remember to include everyone in this.

Dog training

Stand and sit
After a week start with a stand and sit. Now this should be easy as they are learning the stand and now should sit. Show the treat to them in your hand and make a fist. Raise above and over the head as they look they should go into a sit position. Give treat straight away and repeat. Do this 2-3 times a day.

Stand, sit and lie down
Now we begin the lie down command.
Get your Dane to stand as usual and then the sit command next and trail your hand with treat to the ground as the dog follows he should go into a lie position and treat as usual do this also over the course of a week and keep going.

lead training
We have our treat bag at the ready and we allow the pups to take the lead here in the garden some are reluctant to move so show the treat and get them to walk a few steps and treat. Keep doing this till they get used to the lead every day as at 12 weeks you don't want to overwhelm them on their first walk.

recall
Now I do this with the hide and seek in my garden to begin with. We call it bonsai which they love and we treat the minute they come to us. If an older dog take time out to a park or beach with a long line lead and do the same repeatedly every day but do begin in the garden first to. Have a toy or treats to hand so they know this is a game and it comes with rewards. In the garden we go hide and jump out and shout bonsai at them and run away. They catch up and you treat and run away again and repeat. You can do this for 5 minutes or so as they do love this game because you are treating them with goodies. Do go over the top with praise as well and they should return to you every time. Outdoor recall is harder so needs doing as a puppy. Have a good dog there for training, Now as the dogs are playing recall the pup with the treat and run away, yes the other dog will follow make sure you have enough for both now and treat. Keep doing this for as long as you want and take your cues from the pup. If the pup does do a bolter shout her name to get her attention and you run away this click in their brain it's the game again and there is treats at the end of this so she will come running to you.

Now the big outdoors
Puppies are restricted in how long on leads for walks but free play is allowed as long as they are supervised with older and bigger dogs no over the top play.
In the beginnings do a street walk or country walk for 5 minutes for every month and build on that for your puppy. Free play can be for any amount just remember and supervise at ALL times.

Other dogs
Let your Dane meet other dogs in a supervised way. Do not let the other dog jump on your pup and the same for your pup. This is where the sit comes in handy. They will sniff each other mainly bottoms and this is ok. If your Dane is showing fear tell the other owner and remove your dog and try again another day. Do not make a fuss at all just remove and try again.

Children and adults
Now this is your personal choice here but we do not let anyone approach without permission as sometimes a big person approaching can scare them or a small child running at full pelt thinking its ok to cuddle your puppy is not on either. Be firm on this at all times. Yes, they do like a fuss but do it on your terms. Even if they get rude with you just tell them your dog is being taught her good manners for the future.

Now I have to say this isn't over night training this takes time and effort on your part. Please do keep this up on a daily basis, plus training classes and do try a few not just one till you find the correct classes for you and pooch.

You should have already booked you and pooch into puppy or training classes remember both are not the same. Puppy classes are a fun way to have pup interact with each other and to know they come in all sizes. Some will do sit and stay but nothing else as its meant to a fun place for them. Now training is training and dogs learn new skills every week. You must keep up these with your Dane every day. Even if it's a sit or lie down. Most classes give training sheets away to learn.

We always begin with Puppy classes and then onto training classes as your dog progresses through the ranks, they then learn more things.
This is the order your Dane goes in for classes some dont do this and miss out on the tween one more so because we have large breeds.

Classes should be in your area and if you have researched the breed before buying you will have sourced out classes also. Please do go along to see how they do their classes and get a feel for it too as you may not like one but another.

Puppy
Junior
tween
adult

Now there is good citizen as well for your dog and it is on this blog where to go for classes your dog will LOVE you for this and you will LOVE your dog in return because its hard work but pays off for you and dog. link below

So I hope this helps in understanding your pup and yourselves

Getting the best from Kong!

The art of kong stuffing is not difficult to learn, but there are requirements for them to work, both for the dog and the human to be satisfied.
First you need to decide what the kong is for. Is it a meal in itself? A reward for being good? A treat to be left with when you go out between meals? Whatever it’s function there are some rules to follow.
The filling has to be at the correct consistency. If it is too hard to get out dog will become frustrated and bored with it. If it is too soft then it will go too fast and the dog will be left feeling unsatisfied and bored …these apply especially if given one to amuse while you are out and the object was to keep dog occupied to prevent destruction etc.
It has to be the correct kong, as in the correct size for the dog’s mouth and tongue and of the right hardness and density. You do not want the dog to eat the kong…you will end up with a huge vet bill.
Until the dog understands the concept of eating from a kong, never leave alone and unsupervised and if your dog has guarding tendencies then you need to work on the ‘mine’ ‘yours’ training with it…a kong, like a bone is a high resource.
A kong is not a toy: you wouldn’t allow your dog to play with his/her food dish…don’t allow the dog to play with a kong. It is yours not the dog’s and is given at your say so and as such a powerful training and bonding aid.
It has to taste good…be appealing to the dog and have healthy ingredients; the less commercial junk in the better.
By Bev Cobley – canine behaviourist and dietitian. ..............................................................................................................................................................
Now for the rest by loads of friends out there for recipes,
find one you like and have a bash bet your Dane will love you for it.

Filling Consistency:
The filling needs to be firm but not hard…about the consistency of pate of soft cheese to begin with. It is easier to make them up while the filling is still warm or at least at room temperature; you can then leave them in the fridge overnight to firm up to the consistency of firm chilled pate. As the dog works at the filling it will soften with the warmth of his/her paws and the action of the saliva. Frozen kongs (we call them doggy lollies in this house) are good as a treat on hot days and help add more fluids into the system. My dogs love frozen fruity kongs on a hot day…but you might want to give those outside.

Size and Type:
Check the information on the packet…manufacturers give indications of ‘toughness’ but you know the power of your own dogs jaw…if your dog can destroy hard substances then you will need the heavy black kong. If you have a puppy dane you are kong training then the red one is best. Sizes vary and I would recommend the large to begin with and up the sizes. Amazon have an array of sizes to choose from.

If it is in substitute of a meal then it will need to be large enough to take the equivalent of what would normally go in a dish.

Fillings

Reward or Amusement Kong filling recipes

Ellies fave Banana and Honey
Cut of the end of a ripe banana (2 if using the x large kong) and block the small hole at the bottom of the kong.
Slice 3 or 4 thin pieces and put to one side.
Mash the remaining banana with 1 teaspoon of olive or vegetable oil and add a good tablespoon of honey.
Pack into kong, smearing around the insides and place the sliced pieces on the top sealing the large end. Smear with a little oil and put in fridge to set for an hour.

Cream Cheese and Apple
Buy the really cheap cream cheese…the supermarkets own brand equivalent of philly.
Small dice an apple mix with cheese until soft enough to pack into kong. Refrigerate until firm.

Bella's fave Peanut Butter and Meat Paste Layer
Use meat paste as recipe below and a cheap peanut butter…assuming your dog can eat peanuts.
Seal the small hole with peanut butter then smear peanut butter all around the insides. Create layers of the butter and meat paste until it is full ending with a peanut butter layer. Refrigerate until firm.
Got some stale, manky cheese lurking in the back of the fridge? Furry hard or smelly blue? Some stale ham or other sliced meat bits past the use by date? How about left over beans or cooked pulses or barley or vegetable soup?
Don’t waste it…blitz it with margarine or peanut butter or a little cream cheese add finely grated carrot or fruit. Fill and refrigerate.
Almost anything can make a kong filling as long it not on the prohibited food list and is not salty…nothing goes to waste in this house if it dog friendly.

Frozen Kongs

Fruit Variety:
Blitz over ripe fruit to a puree with a little water, you can cook the fruit first if you wish or even buy a cheap jar of apple sauce …I use fruit such as apples, pears, peaches, melons etc ( our market man saves us bruised or over ripe fruit and sells it to us cheap and if you use melons save the seeds for natural worming)
Seal the small end with peanut butter or margarine or cream cheese. Stand kong in egg carton and pour in the soft filling. Freeze 24 hours.

Savoury Variety:
After sealing the small end as above, stand kong in egg carton and fill with fish/meat/chicken stock from boiling that fish/meat/chicken that you did for his/her dinner.
You can stir in a little cooked rice or couscous or cooked lentils or barley etc to make it more interesting. Freeze for 24 hours.

Dairy Variety:
After sealing the small end as above, stand kong in egg carton and fill with goats milk to which you have added 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt…you can also add some pureed fruit and/or honey to the yoghurt if you wish. Pour in the milk smoothie and freeze for 24 hours.

Enjoy now.

For though's upset tummy’s, which do happen from time to time if,

your 24-hour starvation hasn’t worked. Please bare in mind if not cleared up within 3 days please take your pooch to the vets for a well check. If concerned at all take her to the vets that day.

For diarrhoea and loose poos, try chicken with crushed bone or plain chicken necks. They are both easy to digest and the crushed bone

Pumpkin is also an effective stomach soother, for both runny poos and constipation.

Another for diarrhoea is bananas. Feed them whole or mix them with some meat if they eat them of course.

For constipation I like beef with certain fruit mixes such as berries, mangos and apples. This is my only time I would feed fruit and veg for my lot as I don't normally, mind and whiz it up though. You can do this with veg as well just remember the ones on the banned list that are toxic.

Fish is also a good way of ensuring that your dog's poos aren't too dry.

Peanut and Chicken cookies

4 eggs, divided (2 for the dough, 2 for the brushing)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tablespoon honey
225ml of chicken stock
(we usually have stock from left over chicken as we have spoilt dogs that gets theirs cooked)
300g wholemeal flour
150g plain flour
75g cornflour
1/2 a jar of peanut butter

1. Preheat the oven to 325 F/gas 3/ 160 C. In a large bowl, whisk together two of the eggs, the oil and honey. Whisk in the chicken stock.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the whole wheat flour, AP flour and cornmeal. With the mixer on medium speed, slowly pour in the chicken stock mixture, then add the peanut butter. Mix until the dough comes together, about 1 minute. You can do this by hand if you wish.

3. Divide the dough in half. Roll out each ball of dough approximately ½ inch thick. Cut into desired shapes using small (3 to 4-inch) cookie cutters. You can have fun here and make different shapes of cookies.
Place on baking sheets sprayed with cooking oil.

4. Whisk the remaining two eggs and brush the egg wash lightly over the cookies. Allow to dry for 10 minutes and brush with the egg wash a second time (the second wash is optional, but gives the cookies a darker brown colour). Bake until golden brown, about 15-25 minutes, depending on the size of the cookies and your oven.
