PEARL GOURAMI 🐠

Pictured below are my 2 Pearl Gourami.
Gourami, much like betta (fighting fish) are a labyrinth fish. This means that they can breathe oxygen from atmospheric air and not exclusively water like most fish. 🫁

These are some of the more peaceful gourami species and help enforce a nice chilled out community, dispersing any aggression when witnessed. 😎

When breeding, these gourami will create bubble nests at the surface of the aquarium. Much like most labyrinth fish (but not all!). 🫧
Like the majority of fish, they require a balanced diet of protein (i.e. bloodworm/daphnia) + veggies (i.e. spirulina flakes, cucumber, Veggie pellets) to reach peak health, activity and colouration. πŸ₯©πŸ₯¦

CORYDORAS 🐠

These bottom dwellers are some of the cutest + most peaceful little fish you could wish to own!
They are crepuscular, meaning they are active during some of the day as well as during the night. 🌞 🌚

They much prefer being in groups of 6 or more, like being the same species but are also plenty happy with multiple small groups like I have. 😊

Their behaviour when theyre active is fascinating to watch between them foraging the bottom as a big group, to the zoomies like a cat or dog racing around their home! 🏎
Their foraging behaviour ensures most of the food that could have been missed by your top + mid swimmers, will not be missed by them!

RABBIT SNAIL 🐌
Ft. Alan the Angelfish 🐠

This is 1 of 2 rabbit snails i have within my larger aquarium. These are alongside 2 nerite snails, 3 amano shrimp and some ramshorn snails.🦐

Snails are a vital part of any tankw cleanup crew. I chose Rabbit Snails for their cool colour, shape, size and functionality. 🧹

Unlike pest snails i.e. bladder snails, ramshorn snails, Rabbit Snails spawn very slowly within perfect conditions so the likelihood of your tank being overun is extremely low. Unfortunately I have had 2 of their babies get eaten by my keyhole cichlids. πŸ˜‹

Rabbit snails functionality is how they stir the substrate while burrowing into it. They go deeper than my surface level stirrers I have in my Corydoras. 🐟
As part of my cleanup crew they also help eating any leftover food (very rarely is!) However, unlike the rest of my cleaners, algae is not their main food source. 🌱🌿

BAD PICTURE, BIG SURPRISE πŸ₯³

This morning I have been carrying out my weekly routine maintenance for my tanks - water change, trimming + propagating plants etc etc. 🌿🌱🌊

Then I noticed Alan my Angelfish and my male Apisto Hongsloi were focusing on my floating hornwort. 🐠

I have babies, I suspect platy, so far 4 but no doubt more will appear over the next 2-3 weeks. πŸ‘€

We have previously raised fry in predator-heavy aquascapes using this exact breeder box so plan to be doing this again. πŸ’―

How exciting!

REGULAR MAINTENANCE πŸ›

When keeping an aquarium, lots of people neglect or fail to realise the commitment required to correctly care for these living creatures. 🐠

Much like how you have to clean a cats 🐈 litter tray, or take a dog πŸ• for a walk, you need to give your tanks regular maintenance to keep the ecosystem, and all living beings within it, healthy. πŸ’ͺ

The required maintenance varies on what stocking, bioload and filtration systems within your setup. For most tanks, a 30-40% water change every 2 weeks can maintain an established + well planted tank.
This can also be reduced to once a month or increased to every week depending on how full your tank is and how heavily planted it is. 🌿 🌱

When you add water or perform a water change for your aquarium, it is imperative you use a water conditioner to remove chlorine. Tap water in the UK standardly has Chlorine in, and this is poisonous to fish and inverts alike. πŸ’€

ALGAE

There is such thing as too clean for an aquarium!

The part of every aquarium that can look ugly, but is also a sign of health. Some algae use minerals and help add oxygen to your water much like plants. πŸͺ΄
They will process minerals as well as substances harmful to your livestock such as nitrates and use it to grow. 🐠

Different types of algae can also signify different imbalances in your water chemistry, but theyre not all bad and them growing is a sign theyre helping to reduce the imbalance.πŸ§ͺ

Most healthy way of dealing with algae, remove any you find particularly unsightly, but leave it on the sides of your aquarium you cannot see (such as sides or back).
Many fish will also graze on algae to support a balanced diet (just like humans, fish need a balanced diet!) πŸ₯¦ πŸ₯’ πŸͺ±

P.S. if you want something to eat algae but not contribute waste, don't get a pleco, get an Amano Shrimp! 🦐

ALAN THE ANGEL FISH 🐠

Typically social beings, these fish rather be in groups of 2 or 4+ but can be okay as a solo fish.
Alan is currently the boss of my tank, but in the past he has been bullied by smaller fish such as a Paradise Fish (known for being mean). 😠

He is the perfect example of personality deviation in fish, Angel fish are expected to have strong, dominating personalities, however he is a bit of a pacifist.
However, much like other cichlids, Angel fish are on the smarter end of fish as well as very interactive and can recognise their owners. 🧠

Like every other fish, Angel fish require a balanced diet of meat and vegetables. High quality protein is a must to bring out their colours, increase quality of life and increase general wellbeing.
Most common frozen proteins are bloodworm, baby brine shrimp and daphnia. 🦐

With the size of Angel fish, they need tall aquariums so they can traverse the water column without feeling claustrophobic.

FLASHY - My Flash Pleco 🐟

Plecos are some of the more misinterpreted species you can keep in the hobby. Most people believe that algae is bad for their tank and getting a pleco will solve that issue. 🚫

Algae is just another plant, soaking up the nutrients in your water column, some of which are harmful to fish. 🐠
Plecos, although eat some algae, still require other food such as protein tablets and Veggie flakes to get a balanced diet. πŸ₯’ πŸ₯¦
Furthermore, plecos actually contribute MORE waste than they clean. πŸ’©
The majority of Plecos are also nocturnal so you don't see them all that often, but when you do they are fascinating to watch as they don't fit into the general hierarchy of a community tank.

Introducing our most interactive fish: Brian & Judith. 🐟 🐠

This pair are Apistogramma Cacatuoides Dwarf Cichlid, or more commonly known as Cockatoo Apisto.
Every time any of the family pass their aquarium (the whole territory is theirs), they are at the glass saying hello, similar to how a dog would.

Brian & Judith are the reason I have taken it upon myself to learn so much about fish as they display a clear level of intelligence.

🚫 Myth: fish memory only lasts for 2 seconds

βœ…οΈIn reality, different fish have different levels of intelligence including:
- Recognising territory
- Recognising familiar vibrations (including words, different household members footsteps + voices)
- Learn patterns + schedules such as lights + feeding times

If you'd like any assistance regarding your own tropical fish tank to any extent, send me a message! πŸ™
