It’s been nearly 18 months since we started on a project to collect, process and freeze bull semen. It has been quite the journey and like all things with fertility, it is the small bits of detail that matter to get optimum results, that is not always easy. We are now confident and excited to offer our service freezing semen for clients to sell or use themselves!

One observation from our team in the IVF lab is that the quality of the semen once defrosted for bulls varies enormously. Some look like a mass of fresh tadpoles, as it should, some more like a tadpole graveyard, with variation in between.

It’s a fact that different bulls freeze differently. Not only does this vary between bulls, but between collections on different days with the same bull. Even different collections on the same bull on the same day vary!

We have limited control over how well a bull’s semen freezes but we do have control over the amount we can put in each straw. Up to a point, if it freezes less well, you can simply put more in each straw. This reduces the number of straws produced but at least they are capable of producing a calf. However, with really poor freezers it’s not possible to do this.

We believe that a gold standard straw should have about 15 million live s***m per straw to set the user up for success. Our focus is quality rather than quantity, meaning that you may receive fewer but better quality straws with a higher concentration of s***m. Unfortunately some collections will end up being discarded if they are too poor quality.

As always, we are very happy to chat this through with anyone interested.

David

Our annual pub quiz on Friday night was a resounding success! Our raffle managed to raise £260 for a charity very close to our hearts 💕 A big thank you to everyone that came.

Sadly the farming community is more susceptible to sepsis. In the UK alone, 245,000 people are affected by sepsis every year. Please take some time to visit their site and get to know the signs. You could save someone.

FURTHER FUNDED SUPPORT TO TACKLE BVD
Since the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway launched in 2023, eligible cattle, pig and sheep farmers have been able to access funding for an annual vet visit, known as the Animal Health and Welfare Review.

In June 2024 Defra introduced a second type of funded vet visit: the endemic disease follow-up. Building on the support available through the Animal Health and Welfare Review, it’s a great opportunity to access testing and bespoke advice to tackle costly endemic diseases.
At the point it launched the endemic disease follow-up visit was only available to sheep, pig and beef cattle keepers. In January this year this was extended to dairy cattle keepers as well.
To be eligible, the farm must have 11 or more cattle registered in England and a single business identifier (SBI) linked to a county parish holding (CPH) number registered in England.
To have an endemic disease follow-up visit the farm must first have completed the Animal Health and Welfare Review. The endemic disease follow-up for dairy farmers is £215 for cattle with no BVD or £1,714 for where BVD is present in the herd to fund a PI hunt.

Prior to January this year a beef or cattle keeper could only have a funded PI hunt through the service if one or more of their animals tested positive for the disease during the animal health and welfare review visit.

If the farm has a negative test result during your initial animal health and welfare review vet visit, but you suspect that the disease could be present and recommend a PI hunt, the farm will be able to access further funding for that purpose. This is now available for both dairy and beef cattle keepers.

We hope you have found this information helpful. More information about AHWP can be found online - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/animal-health-and-welfare-pathway/animal-health-and-welfare-pathway/
