Do you know what your sheath cleaner is using? π€
Your horses ge****ls is made up of exceptionality sensitive skin compared to the rest of its body. The epidermis (thin layer of skin) around your geldings π and your mares π has a high density of nerve endings.
So why should we be careful on what products we use??
Iβve heard of some horror stories along my cleaning travels, of cleaners using hibiscrub π«£ baby oil, shelf bought cleaners and bars of soap π
Firstly, hibiscrub is used for wounds to disinfect the area. This is a very strong product and SHOULD NOT be used on your horses sensitive areas. Not only will it kill any bad bacteria, it can also strip your geldings healthy bacteria (sm**ma) which is a natural secretion to keep your boys π healthy, drop and retract after urination and/or relaxation.
Bars of soap π«£ this is a big no no, for me anyway. I find bars of soap dry my hands out so god knows what this would do to your horses bits. And, not to think about potential cross contamination. Thrush in horses sheaths and EPV (Equine Pappiloma Virus) is contagious. We donβt want to be passing that between the herd.
Shop bought sheath cleaners π« a lot of them have products in them which can alter your horses natural PH. Again, this is something I would advise against using.
And the dreaded baby oil π³ please, for the love of all that is holy. Do not use on your boys π it will create a film around their π it can even burn them when they are hanging low and proud with having oil lathered around it. Not only that, it will encourage your geldings βsheath systemβ to create more and thicker sm**ma π€’
If you need to clean your boys inbetween their cleans, I would advise warm water only. If youβre knowledgeable enough to clean your horses sheath, water based l**e and warm water are the only products I would advise to use.
If you are worried about your horses π or π drop me a message. Iβll be more than happy to help π§Ό π« π π
