Wendy L Suddes Horsemanship

Wendy L Suddes Horsemanship Wendy Suddes is a BHS level 5 performance coach and a teacher dedicated to lifelong learning. The background story. It’s time to start a new chapter.

Wendy is also an equine welfare and behaviour specialist and operates a large rehabilitation facility from her home in County Durham, North East England. I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t drawn to horses and my life and career has subsequently been dominated by these beautiful animals. From a non-horsey family, I was almost entirely self-taught to ride as a child. Agriculture was however my o

riginal career of choice and after college I travelled to the USA for two years working on farms and ranches and studied at the University of Minnesota. I rode western too, which suited my cowboy style, before returning to the UK, where I eventually learned to ride in an arena and discovered what diagonals were in trot! The decision to concentrate on a career in equestrianism came soon after my return to the UK. This led to more education and then into teaching. I worked for almost twenty years as North of England Manager, for the UK’s largest equestrian organisation and prior to that, I spent seven years as Head of Equine Studies in an FE College where I also lectured in Agriculture and Small Animal Care. My interest in Equine Health, Welfare and Behaviour developed around this time and years later these subjects have become specialisms. This led to the development of an Equine Training and Rehabilitation Facility, where for over fifteen years now, the team here have worked with literally hundreds of horses and ponies, most of whom joined us with serious health, welfare and behavioural issues. The influence of the last few years, culminating in the test that was 2020, has been instrumental in shaping the decision to now offer the following:

• Post-injury/illness and Post-op Rehabilitation.
• Short Term and Holiday Boarding and/or Training
• Horsemanship Clinics and Camps
• Private Tuition
• Lectures and Demonstrations

In 2017, I was honoured to be the first person to achieve the new BHS Level 5 Coach in Complete Horsemanship certificate (the replacement for the BHSI). The following year we launched a new equine charity ‘Here4Horses’ which goes from strength to strength. Please visit www.here4horses.org.uk and support our work there, in any way you can. Throughout my life I have enjoyed competing on mainly homebred horses and Covid 19 aside, have no plans to hang up my boots just yet.

** VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE**

We have been dealt a huge blow – seriously affecting our Horse Sense Conference Series 2025.

One of our key speakers, Dr Andrew McLean, is now unable to make the long flight from Australia, due to unexpected health issues. We feel we can’t go ahead with the conferences in Andrew’s absence and will therefore re-group and make plans for spring 2026.

We are currently looking at the schedule and exploring options to still go ahead with the Live Question Time events - potentially with revised dates. All existing ticket purchases will be refunded in full.

Please keep an eye on our page for any further updates.

We send every good wish to Andrew for a speedy recovery.

Wise words 🙌 - although a pity the words don’t fit with the horses unhappy expression in the image.

Advice for everyone who wants to ride and train well, from Master Trainer, George Morris:“Feel the hindleg in your hand, a steady hand. Today we have this fashion for hand riding, don’t copy fashion, what is important, is correctness. You must have elasticity from your shoulder to the horse’s mouth, a straight line, a steady connection and elasticity of hand. https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2019/05/more-wisdom-from-master-george-morris/

Top Tip Tuesday

I have said this before, and I will say it again... and again... and again... because it's so darn important AND it's so darn common!

🤓Check. Your. Leathers. 🤓

⭐️Don't check they're on the same number hole (these ones are!).
⭐️Don't presume because they're fairly new that they're ok (these ones were pretty new).
⭐️And don't think it's not important... because it IS.

Even the smallest amount of difference makes a HUGE difference to your horse.
Imagine you were giving someone a piggy 🐷 back, and they hung off one side, even just a little bit.... how much you'd have to brace and compensate for them being uneven.
🦄Think about your horse, as you ask for canter... you're expecting him to lift his inside limbs up to make a nice transition... that's a million times harder if you're hanging off that side - even if it's only by a few mm.
👇🏽
The best way to check them? Take them off the saddle, put your feet in the stirrups and check to see if the buckles are level... just like I am doing in this photo!
👇🏽
What can you do to help keep them even?
👌🏽Use a mounting block, don't mount from the ground.
👌🏽Make sure you ride evenly. If you mainly hack, change diagonals in trot regularly and change legs in canter, so you ride each 'side' evenly.
👌🏽Plus... swap them over (left to right, right to left) every time you clean your tack.

⭐️And, consider getting a really decent pair of non-stretch leathers. ⭐️
