LETS TALK PUPPY COATS AND "COAT CHANGE"
Many are unaware of the coat change, It certainly took me by surprise before I was a groomer and had an 8 month old matted puppy! π²π³
It's a time where their soft, fluffy, puppy coat starts to change to their adult coat.
Adult coats can be harsher , not as floppy , more structure, thicker and more robust than puppy coat
Coat change can happen anytime from 4 months old depending
It's comes as a shock when suddenly your puppy with its easy coat you've had no problems with is suddenly harder to get a brush through and matting at their skin π² sometimes owners don't even notice it as the immediate visual of the dogs coat is still floaty and loose (see pic below of a bathed dog, all the matting clearly visible once wet but has loose locks on the top so not obvious to the untrained eye when they are dry)
Matting during puppy coat change is fast! normal matting from not maintaining a coat happens gradually starting with small tangles and building, puppy coat change matting I swear when my Jasmine was going through it happened daily, clumps of matting, it was hell!
The reason they matt up fast during this stage is because while the old puppy coat hairs are dying the new adult coat of different texture, strength, size ect are growing from the same follicles, the two joining together are troublesome π±
It can be a sad time for all involved,
Firstly matts are uncomfortable/ painful for dogs so it can have a negative effect on grooming/brushing the puppy
Secondly puppy may need to be clipped extremely short to get the matts that are close to the skin off (the kindest way of removing) which can be upsetting for owners to see their little one shaved off especially if they had no idea of the matting ( I will always show or send photos of matting and get permission to shave them before doing so!)
Thirdly for groomers it can wipe out all the previous training and desensitisation we've done with the puppy due to the discomfort it gives them and sadly some owners don't understand it and never return which is very upsetting as we've built a lovely relationship with the puppy and done all the grooming training with them, we're only doing whats best for themπͺ
Before I was a groomer I was told by a lady with a shipoo she thought her puppy's haircut had ruined her hair as it grew back differently and was never the same, I now know it was different because her adult coat had grown through which does feel, look and act differently to puppy coat
The best advice I personally think as coat change starts in haircut breeds, and I've done it with my own dogs is to go very short with a little fluff and style ( doesn't have to be skinned), this will be so much easier to manage for you and your puppy, keep up with brushing then once it's over ( time varies for them all) they can grow longer again if preffered π
Double coated breeds (non haircuts) would benefit from regular blast and brush outs to rid the loose puppy coat from their coat
Short coated breeds moult more during coat change and will benefit from regular de-shed brushing
