NEW PRICE BANDS effective for appointments 1st Jan 2026 onwards.

With reluctance I have to make changes to the price bands. The actual prices haven't changed, but some postcodes have moved up a band. In most cases this is an increase of just £5.

My price structure been unchanged since 2022! Unfortunately the cost of motoring isn't unchanged, and with some destinations taking over 3hrs return trip, I'm not even covering minimum wage for my total time on the appointment.

I hope you agree that even band D still represents good value for money, with knowledgeable one-to-one attention in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Sadly, also I am no longer able to cover postcodes EH1 and EH2 because our vehicles cannot enter Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone. Clients in these areas might like to borrow a friend or relatives house for half an hour, or find an alternative venue outwith the L*Z :-)

I thank you for your support over the past ten years and look forward to meeting you, or seeing you again, next year.

Yesterday's Yes goes to a cute little Mini Dachshund. Wee soul wasn't sure about the visitor and the machinery but some ham treats from mum swayed her opinion and we got some super images eventually. It's not a big litter but she's a first time mum and I've a feeling that will suit her perfectly.

An adorable little Papillon girl is expecting her first litter in the New Year and what a gem she was to scan. A wonderful way to start 2026, I can't wait for the photos!

Geek alert! This was a day ~30 scan. Processing the images at home afterwards I was stopped in my tracks by one that at first glance I was about to delete. Usually you see a cross section of a foetus but on closer inspection on this one I could just make out the entire thing.
Pic #3 is the original scan image and pic #4 I have drawn the outline of the foetus on and added a photo of what a 30 day foetus looks like in real life, to compare.

Still see a bowl of grey porridge? OK I'll try harder next time :-)

Several empty scans lately, it's never nice to be the bearer of bad news :-(

So to cheer ourselves up, here's a recent scan I didn't post before because it's one of my own girls!
The scan image is a cross section of a skull which was used to calculate an approximate EDD for the litter. Not that I didn't know the dates but you know - have scanner, will play ...

Surprise Season continues :-)

Today's big Yes went to a cuddly, mellow Cocker Spaniel who had been keeping the news of a secret tryst to herself for a while. Thankfully for this love-lorn Juliet, her crafty Romeo can only have been the resident stud dog, so this just bumped puppy plans forward by a season or two.

This pregnancy is sufficiently advanced that the images can't show entire embryos, just a cross section. On the second image (four gestational sacs) the dark circle in the top puppy is the puppy's stomach, and we saw little hearts beating away on several others. These frozen images do the real-time, moving images no credit at all.

YES - it's surprise season! A very beautiful golden Lab is expecting another good sized litter, although you'd never tell from her svelte, toned outline.
This is one very good reason to have your girl scanned, a scan can answer that all important Yes/No question and allow a breeder to prepare for a successful whelping in plenty of time.

Yes we have Daschunds cooking nicely, much to the genuine surprise of her owners, who didn't think she had taken. A nice sized litter due in November - just goes to show it pays to have a scan for peace of mind even if you're not convinced your girl is expecting!

A Yes couldn't be much clearer than this! A small but perfectly formed litter is on it's way in November for possibly the world's most laid back Basset girl. Why stand when you can sit, and furthermore why sit when you can lie down? Not a bad mantra actually

A trip to the coast today for repeat clients with a lovely choccy Lab girl, who now know she is expecting her second litter.
I had some very excited spectators for this scan, two ladies who were both hoping for a pup to add chaos to their Christmas. Seems they're on Santas good list because their wish has been granted!

Once more into the deepest darkest Borders, dear friends. Well not that dark but very rainy.
Today's big Yes goes to an adorable Welsh Springer Spaniel who is expecting her first litter next month. Exciting times ahead.

Between her, her two Border Collie and her Mini Wirehaired Daschund colleagues the treat pot was enthusiastically and rapidly emptied. I'd better get dehydrating more liver, PDQ.

This stunning rainbow lit up the sky for the whole of the drive home today.
Folk who know me, understand that rainbows are hugely symbolic to me. I've never seen one like this before. It doesn't show up on the picture but there were two narrow inverted rainbows either side of the main one, top and bottom, plus a huge, softly glowing one much higher up.

I make this my first ever 'quadruple' rainbow. I couldn't find the pot of gold at the end but maybe I should buy a lottery ticket? If I'm not here next week you'll know what happened ...

BorderScan

BorderScan is run by me, Heather.

I'm a retired science teacher who has lived with and trained a variety of dog breeds and cross-breeds for over 30 years. We bred our first litter of pups in 1982 and since then I have bred Border Collies and Miniature American Shepherds under my kennel name of 'Kilnhurst'.

Ultrasound scanning combines my love of science, dogs and dog breeding. It allows me to monitor my own canine girls during their pregnancies and also to help other breeders in the privacy and convenience of their own homes. Most dogs go to the vet because they’re ill, and pregnant bi***es are not ill. As much as I genuinely like my vet I wasn’t particularly at ease having to take my girls to the surgery for a scan and they didn’t enjoy the trip, either. Scanning at home took the stress out of everything and removed the small risk of infection completely. I set out with the intention of just scanning my own girls ... but then word got out ... I now have a quietly but steadily growing list of clients who have recommended me by word of mouth, which is the best possible form of advertising, really.

I am proud to be Certified in Canine Ultrasound Imaging (Levels 1 & 2) with Vet Image Solutions in Kent, who are an invaluable source of mentoring and information.
