Yeay - new machine arrived! Upgraded and updated version (more bells and whistles) of my original, which has done sterling service for TEN YEARS this month. Happy tenth scanning anniversary to me!

The old faithful machine had started to throw a few odd tricks such as randomly forgetting the date, which wasn't useful especially when information like EDD was required. I wondered what other edges were starting to fray in it's little electronic brain.
I started a savings campaign which went into overdrive when I discovered that the expected working life of portable ultrasound machines is around 3-4yrs ... and mine was ten. No wonder it was getting forgetful, what a little trooper it's been. Here's hoping it's replacement does as well for the next decade :-)

Another late-ish scan (~day 45) in Edinburgh today; I promise not to go away in June again! This time a happy, waggy Labrador girl who managed to stand still just long enough to enjoy her ham treats and for me to get the probe in position.
This is probably the biggest Yes of the year so far, Edinburgh is expecting a new furry football team on the scene next month. Time for her excited human family to make preparations for the patter of many tiny paws.

YESSS! 11 puppies - football team! Well done everybody, what a great 'result'!

Due to our extended summer break, this is a late scan (~day 50) for a long-term client who - having had a previous encounter with pyometra - at this stage just wanted reassurance that all was progressing well with the latest pregnancy. We were able to identify good heartbeats in every fetus we saw and there was lots of puppy acrobatics going on too.
The first image is a cross section of a chest with a little heart beating away towards the top. The second is a top down section of a skull with some paws waving away to it's left.

But this, lovely people, is why scanners prefer to scan between days 30 - 35! As to giving even a vague puppy count ... by this stage the fetuses have grown to a point where they overlap and are sitting at all sorts of angles, so deciding where one ends and another begins is nigh on impossible.

We're back, baby! Well - puppy. "We're back puppy" doesn't have quite the same ring though.

Today's long trip north was well worth the heat (Scotland and heat in the same sentence, whatever next?) as today's big YES went to a sweet Sheltie girl who is expecting a very long-awaited litter. Happy clients, happy scanner. Can't wait to see these wee souls next month.

A very full diary this week, with all the clients I couldn't see previously. Let's hope this fantastic start gets the ball rolling for the rest of the week.

Edit: Huge Congrats to the lovely owners on their largest ever litter of five - and all girls!

My apologies for any inconvenience, but no scan appointments are available in June.
Messages will continue to be answered as usual. If your girl is due to be bred in June, get in touch as soon as she's been mated because July's appointment calendar is filling up fast.
See you soon!

It's a season for firsts; another breed I've not scanned before - an Australian Cattle Dog. What a smashing, calm and affectionate girl I met today. Her first litter and a good sized team on board here. Looking forward to seeing the puppy photos next month and perhaps even some puppy cuddles, who could resist? ;-)

Edit: Five sweet puppies, bang on time. Congratulations folks!
Another new lesson - ACD pups are born white with a few black points, the dark ticking comes in later.

A scan earlier this month on a new breed for me, the Irish Terrier.
(Well I've met Irish Terriers before, just not scanned them.)

This sweet girl was nervous about trips to the vets so a scan at home was ideal for her. No time pressure, just the space and peace to let her settle and get comfortable with the process, exactly what mobile scanning should be all about.

Happy clients now have a positive scan and preparations can be made to welcome a new litter for this rare breed.

Update: Congrats on the arrival of five bouncing pups including the little girl in green who was safely delivered by The Veterinary Wellness Centre in Edinburgh.

I've been a bit remiss with photos lately - busy times.

I scanned the world's most bouncy Golden Retriever girl back in March, so happy and so full of energy that while this isn't the scan image I'm most proud of, at least we got one at all and pregnancy could be confirmed!

She has since gone on to have a beautiful litter of 7. Congratulations to everyone on these long awaited arrivals. If they're even half as much fun as their mum, they'll be amazing dogs.

So many 'empty' scans lately, so many disappointed clients. I really feel for everyone, I know it can be so difficult to hear the verdict which heralds the (temporary) end of your hopes and dreams. My heart goes out to you all x

But today there was a big Yes for a beautiful, cuddly lab girl with a big litter on board. Busy times ahead for her humans next month!
Wonderful result.

BorderScan

BorderScan is run by me, Heather.

I'm a retired science teacher who has lived with and trained a variety of dog breeds and cross-breeds for over 30 years. We bred our first litter of pups in 1982 and since then I have bred Border Collies and Miniature American Shepherds under my kennel name of 'Kilnhurst'.

Ultrasound scanning combines my love of science, dogs and dog breeding. It allows me to monitor my own canine girls during their pregnancies and also to help other breeders in the privacy and convenience of their own homes. Most dogs go to the vet because they’re ill, and pregnant bi***es are not ill. As much as I genuinely like my vet I wasn’t particularly at ease having to take my girls to the surgery for a scan and they didn’t enjoy the trip, either. Scanning at home took the stress out of everything and removed the small risk of infection completely. I set out with the intention of just scanning my own girls ... but then word got out ... I now have a quietly but steadily growing list of clients who have recommended me by word of mouth, which is the best possible form of advertising, really.

I am proud to be Certified in Canine Ultrasound Imaging (Levels 1 & 2) with Vet Image Solutions in Kent, who are an invaluable source of mentoring and information.
