⚠️ 𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗨𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗧 ⚠️
The Nematodirus Forecast map below illustrates that some areas in Northern Ireland are experiencing areas of high risk due to recent warm temperatures.
- The weather stations closest our branches are indicating moderate risk.
- Sheep Farmers are recommended to be vigilant, monitoring the forecast as it updates and take necessary precautions to protect their lambs from Nematodirus infection.

How to use the forecast:
- Analyse the forecast along with your grazing history.
- Zoom in on the map to locate the stations closest to your flock.
- Click on the stations. Each station has more detailed information on the current risk level, guidance on what to do next, and information on when the forecast was last updated.
- Carry out a risk assessment and take action if needed.

The forecast can be used in combination with your grazing history to assess the risk of Nematodirus infection in your lambs.

⚠️ 𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗨𝗦 ⚠️

Nematodirosis is a particularly nasty disease in lambs, causing a high number of mortalities and stunting the growth of many others.
- It is caused by the Nematodirus battus worm.
- It can strike very quickly depending on climatic conditions and level of risk with little or no warning.
- Cold weather delays hatching so when we get a sudden change in temperature it can trigger a mass hatch.
- If this coincides with when lambs are starting to take in significant amounts of grass (over about six weeks old), the result can be devastating.
- Damage is done by large numbers of immature larvae that are not producing eggs and therefore faecal egg counts (FECs) are not a reliable indicator of risk.
- Rapid action is often required and this has to be based on a risk assessment.

Risk factors
- Are your lambs are grazing pasture that carried lambs last spring ?
- Are they old enough to be eating significant amounts of grass?
- Do you have groups where there is also likely to be a challenge from coccidiosis?
- Has there been a sudden, cold snap recently followed by a period of warm weather?
- Have you got lambs that are under other stresses - Triplets? Not enough milk?
- South-facing fields tend to have an earlier hatch therefore as a guide when using the information of SCOPS Nematodirus Forecast every 100m increase in altitude will delay hatching by about seven days.

Action
- If possible, avoid infection.
- Regular monitoring advised.
- Move at-risk lambs to low risk pastures for example: pasture that was not grazed by lambs the previous spring
- If you cannot avoid high risk pasture grazed by lambs the previous spring and decide you need to treat for nematodirus, we advise farmers to use a white (1-BZ) drench.
- Check that treatment is effective by taking a FEC seven to 10 days after treatment.
- The first confirmed case of nematodirus resistant to the 1-BZ group was reported in 2011 and therefore we recommend farmers are advised to follow SCOPS guidance on correct anthelmintic administration
- Remember, it may be necessary to treat lambs more than once depending on the spread of ages in a group and subsequent weather conditions.

Remember if your have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss with our Vets or our SQP staff.

Barry Mulgrew from Killeeshil had a great start to his day when this superb heifer delivered 3 healthy heifer calves naturally.
Our vet Daire called to check the heifer and these 3 lovely calves over. He supplemented them with colostrum during his visit.
We hope they do well for you Barry. 🐮🐮😊

Prevention is better than any cure! 💉

Spring time is when we see the most cases of neonatal diarrhoea on farms. One of the most common causes is Cryptosporidiosis.

Cryptosporidiosis is a highly prevalent gastrointestinal parasitic disease that can infect a wide range of animals and is zoonotic which means humans can also be infected. 🧤

Bovilis Cryptium is developed for vaccination of pregnant heifers and cows to raise antibodies in their colostrum against C.parvum intended for passive immunisation of calves to significantly reduce clinical signs along with appropriate disinfection of environment and colostrum management.

After years of working together to tackle cryptosporidiosis, Padraig Duggan from Killenaule Vets shares the benefits of using Bovilis Cryptium for the first time on Denis Large’s suckler farm in Co. Tipperary. 🐂💉

🗣️ Reach out to your local vet to learn more about how Bovilis Cryptium can make a difference.

The convenience and efficacy of Bovilis Cryptium has made life much easier for Denis and Anne Large and their 134 suckler cow herd they tend to on their holding near Urlingford in north Tipperary.
