Pets and hazardous weather

Weather can be unpredictable. As pet owners, it is important to ensure our pets are safe regardless of what is happening outside. With the onset of winter, we are subject to high winds, torrential rains and flooding in some areas.
As a pet owner, we hope that you will consider the following:

1. Keep your pet indoors and you can play calming music to reduce storm anxiety.
2. Keep a supply of food, fresh water and bedding. If a storm has been forecast, ensure that you order your pet's medication in advance if necessary. Keep everything somewhere safe, dry and easily accessible.
3. Keep pet carriers to hand in case you need to vacate your home.
4. If you have to leave your home, make sure that your pet is secure for transport and be sure to take food, bedding, water, litter trays and documents (eg microchip details and vaccination cards in waterproof sealed containers), in case it is some time before you can return home.

Hopefully, these hints will be handy but we hope that they won't be needed! Stay safe!

What to do if you find a baby bird

If you spot a baby bird on the ground during spring or summer, in most cases there is no need to worry. If the baby bird has only a few or no feathers, then you have probably found a nestling. Where possible, they should be renested and left in the wild as they won't survive long out of the nest. You can gently pop it back into the nest (but only if you are certain which nest it came from). If you can't see a nest or if it is injured, it would be best to contact a local wildlife rescue centre..

If the baby bird has feathers, it is a fledgeling and it is normal to see them on the ground. Most fledgelings don't need to be rescued but instead need to be left alone. Usually the parents are nearby and feeding the baby. It would be best to keep your pets away, leave the fledgeling alone and monitor it. Birds can take better care of their young than humans can. It is also important to remember that not all birds nest in trees. If you are sure that the baby bird is orphaned or is visibly injured, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation centre as soon as possible.

For specific information about how to help different species, you can take a look at the RSPCA's baby bird advice website.

An excellent write up and safety information from the SSPCA.

Keep all your pets safe in this hot weather!

Is it too hot to walk your dog? โ˜€๏ธ

As temperatures climb, it's important to be mindful of your dog's safety during walks.

More dogs die from hot walks than in hot cars. Your dog depends on you to make the right call. When in doubt, sit the walk out.

Typically, you can walk your dog at temperatures below 20ยฐc. While most dogs are comfortable walking between 15ยฐc and 25ยฐc, individual factors like age, breed, coat type, and fitness level play a significant role in how well they tolerate the heat.

Check out the table below to see how your dogโ€™s breed and health may affect their ability to handle the heat.

As with us, dental hygiene is very important to maintain a beautiful smile with our canine and feline friends. Regular dental check ups with your vet can help identify and treat dental issues. Signs include bad breath, drooling, loose teeth and changes in eating habits. Harley our 4-year old patient was showing some of these issues and was admitted for dental treatment.

๐Ÿ˜ She now has a beautiful set of pearly whites and is flashing a Hollywood smile! ๐Ÿ˜

Did you know those tiny, creepy crawlies can cause big problems for our furry friends (and us!)? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Yep, we're talking about ticks!

As the weather warms up and we're all spending more time outdoors, ticks are becoming super active. That's why it's Tick Bite Prevention Week! ๐ŸŒฟโ˜€๏ธ
