🐰Welfare Week🐰
Let’s talk about rabbit housing…
As we all know a hutch is never enough. But it’s still far too easy to walk into Pets at Home buy a tiny cage and rabbits, take them home and subject them to a lifetime of misery, where their needs are not met.
We’re using our welfare week to help educate, so that people can truly understand the needs of rabbits.
So if a hutch or pet shop cage is not suitable..: where should rabbits live?
Well there are lots of suitable options, and we have loved seeing how creative some rabbit parents have got in providing adequate space for their babies.
Some options:
*free roam in a rabbit proofed room.
*dog crate panels used to create a penned off area of at least 3m x 2m within the house.
*free roam in an insulated shed or summer house. Electricity is preferred within this building to provide heat during the winter and a fan during the summer.
Minimum requirements:
Rabbit enclosures must be:
*at least 3m by 2m.
*at least 1m high - if outdoors, this MUST be roofed. If indoors, open topped is ok but we'd advise a higher height panel to prevent escapes
*predator proof.
*contain constant access to high quality hay.
*provide enrichment and stimulation.
We sometimes see places stating rabbits need a minimum of 60 square foot. The RWAF makes an excellent point, that 60 square foot does not always meet their minimum requirements, because it must also have a section at least 3m long for exercise.
Drop us pictures of your rabbit set ups below, let’s inspire and help each other to provide the best for our little fluff monkeys.
