Our new puppy course starting this week is now fully booked.

There are limited spaces available for the puppy course beginning on 17th June.

I also have availability for 1:1 puppy training which is helpful in addressing specific issues you may be having with your puppy, as well as for a more personalised training experience.

If you'd like a chat about puppy training, or training for your adolescent or adult dog, pop me a message and we can have a chat to discuss your training needs.

🐾 Have you got a new puppy? 🐾

Welcoming a new puppy into you home is incredibly exciting, but it’s also:

🐾 Exhausting
🐾 Overwhelming
🐾 A huge learning curve

One minute they’re asleep in your arms looking adorable… and the next they’re chewing the skirting boards, zooming around the house, or waking you up at 3am! 😅

The early weeks with a puppy can feel full of pressure — toilet training, biting, lead walking, socialisation, sleep routines, confidence building… and trying to work out if you’re doing it “right”.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

A good puppy course is about so much more than teaching “sit” and “down”. It’s about helping you to:

🐾 Build a strong relationship with your puppy
🐾 Develop confidence and calmness
🐾 Prevent unwanted behaviours before they become habits
🐾 Learn how your puppy learns
🐾 Create positive experiences through enrichment, play, and training

Every puppy is an individual, and the right support in those early months can make such a difference for the future.

If you’re feeling excited, nervous, tired, or all three at once — that’s completely normal. You and your puppy are learning together but we are here to give support.

There’s a few spaces left on our June puppy courses if you’d like to join. Pop me a message to book or for more information 🙂

🐾 JUNE PUPPY CLASSES 🐾

We’ve got some spaces left on our puppy courses starting in June at Kettleholm Village hall near Lockerbie.

As well as covering the basics of lead walking, stays / waits, impulse control and recall, we also cover:

🐾 Co-operative care strategies - perfect for helping to take the stress out of grooming and vet visits

🐾 Canine body language & developing your puppy’s confidence

🐾 Support for the human end of the lead with increasing understanding of how your puppy learns

🐾 How play can help develop essential skills and benefit both you and your puppy

⭐️ Our groups are kept small so that all puppies and owners can receive individualised support & coaching.

⭐️ We don’t just look at the end goal - but at ensuring you have a solid understanding of the steps needed to get there in order to set your puppy up for success.

⭐️ We don’t offer another generic puppy course - we want to equip you with the skills to help your puppy become a confident, well-rounded companion so the skills for life.

It’s Friday. And just like that - another week is over!

Tomorrow I’ll be up at Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre for their Open Day. I’ll be there with a great range of natural dogs treats and chews - with something for everyone.

I didn’t get any photos or videos of my session there this week, but both Buzz and Jethro worked really hard in their sessions.

Oh! And I think I may be getting a soft spot for foxhounds ❤️ This week I’ve had the pleasure of working with three different foxhounds and they have all blown me away with their amazing work.

🐾 SHAPING vs LURING 🐾

We covered this important topic in last night’s puppy session (we cover it regularly in a lot of sessions as well)

Both luring and shaping are valuable training skills.
Both can help dogs learn quickly.
But they teach dogs in very different ways.

✨ LURING
Using food, a toy, or a hand target to guide the dog into position.

For example:
Moving a treat over a dog’s head to encourage a sit.

Luring can:
✔ Help dogs learn quickly
✔ Build confidence
✔ Make new movements easier
✔ Reduce frustration in some dogs

But…

If we rely on lures for too long, dogs can become dependent on seeing the food first before responding.

✨ SHAPING
Rewarding tiny choices and movements towards the behaviour you want.

For example:
Rewarding a dog for looking at a platform, then stepping towards it, then touching it, then standing on it.

Shaping can:
✔ Encourage problem solving
✔ Build confidence and optimism
✔ Create more engaged learners
✔ Help dogs offer behaviours independently

But…

Shaping can also be frustrating if the steps are too big or the dog doesn’t fully understand the game yet.

The truth?
Good training isn’t about declaring one method “better” than the other.

The best trainers learn when to:
➡ guide
➡ support
➡ simplify
➡ step back
➡ and let the dog think

Sometimes I lure.
Sometimes I shape.
Sometimes I combine both.

It’s no secret that I love teaching with shaping and usually prefer to shape a behaviour over luring it, but it entirely depends on the dog.

This is Brac ❤️

A rescue dog who stepped onto the green carpet at Crufts this year to compete in flyball.

And honestly? That feels pretty special.

Because rescue dogs can often be underestimated.

People see the barking, the nerves, the overexcitement, the lack of confidence, or the “quirks”… but behind so many of those behaviours is simply a dog trying to navigate a world that once felt uncertain.

Brac’s journey is a reminder that rescue dogs are not “less than”.
They are capable, resilient, funny, intelligent, and full of potential when given the chance to learn, feel safe, and truly thrive.

National Rescue Dog Day isn’t just about celebrating rescue dogs themselves — it’s about celebrating what can happen when patience, training, enrichment, understanding, and trust all come together ❤️

From rescue dog… to Crufts competitor.

We couldn’t be prouder of him

Does anyone else’s terrier love opening boxes?
Buddy would have this lot all opened up within minutes given half a chance 🤣 She’s definitely an independent terrier!

I’ll be at Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre Open Day on Saturday with a great selection of training treats and a range long lasting chews suitable for all ages of dogs.
