Calling Home Educator families!

We’re hosting a led workshop on Tuesday 16th September as we explore the key factors needed to help an ecosystem thrive.

You’ll be getting hands-on to create your own self-sustaining ecosystem to take home, as well as having the opportunity to spend the rest of the day discovering more about the animals on site.

Tickers cost £10 per child and £9 per adult, with guests emailed an educational resource pack before the session.

We’re joining the BIAZA Summer Bioblitz to record the native flora and fauna which call our zoo site their home.

The initiative runs from Monday (25) until Sunday, 31 August and aims to help localised native species conservation efforts.

And if you’re coming to the zoo next week, you can help us!

All you need to do is download the iNaturalist app on your phone and photograph any native wildlife or plants that you spot around the zoo site during your day out.

The photo needs to be uploaded to the app, where it will be officially recorded as well as contributing to our total.

And next week you can find out more about some of the species we’ve been busy surveying over the summer - the clue's in the picture! 🔎

Huge thanks to everyone who attended our painted dog celebrations last weekend – you paw-some lot helped us raise more than £1,000 for Painted Dog Conservation (PDC).

This incredible amount will enable rangers out in Zimbabwe to purchase two anti-snare collars, which are vital tools in protecting painted dogs from poaching threats in the wild.

Anti-snare collars not only can contain trackers, but include metal prongs, which can snap snare wires if a dog becomes trapped in one.

As part of our educational interpretation around the dog habitat, visitors can spot a replica anti-snare collar in the ranger cupboard, which we’ve had especially made to help reiterate the PDC's conservation work.

It’s International Orangutan Day when we join the global campaign to raise awareness of these critically endangered animals.

Orangutans face enormous threats in the wild. They’re hunted for the pet trade and are losing their habitat at a rapid pace due to the demand for palm oil.

But here at DZC we’re helping in the fightback against their extinction.

We work alongside Sintang Orangutan Center in Indonesia, which specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of these charismatic great apes. Thanks to our contributions, we’ve already been able to fund a second Forest School, where rescued orangutans can learn basic survival skills, such as climbing, foraging for food and nest building, before they’re released into protected wild forests.

Our sponsorship, which is raised through general zoo visits, purchases of experiences and keeper days and donations, also continues to fund the operational costs of the Forest School, including the provision of food, vitamins and medicines, as well as monitoring equipment and electricity costs.

If you’re visiting us this week, don’t forget it’s our orangutan focus week, when our education team will be leading activities and crafts at the orangutan habitat every day until Sunday. You can also hear more about this magnificent species during our daily 12.45pm Presenter-led talk throughout the summer holiday.

This week our critically endangered Bornean orangutans are in the spotlight, as we highlight how zoo conservation projects are making an essential difference to great apes.

Hear more about our charismatic family, who are all part of a vital European breeding programme and find how orangutans are threatened in the wild and what we can and are doing to help.

Throughout the week, join our education team at the orangutan habitat for interactive games and activities, as visitors discover how things we purchase on a daily basis can impact great apes in the wild.

Visitors can step back in time during a medieval weekend in the castle courtyard later this month.

We’re welcoming local re-enactment group, The Guild of St. Edmund, on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August, who will be hosting a living history camp in the 11th century castle grounds.

Discover more about a medieval way of life with members showcasing their skills in the likes of calligraphy and basket weaving.

They’ll also be children’s archery as well as weapons and armour on display.

Normal zoo admission applies.

Don’t forget if you’re visiting us today, we’ll be officially cutting the ribbon on our new African-themed painted dog habitat at 2.15pm.

As part of our painted dog focus week, we’re delighted to be joined by the Chairman of Stichting Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) in Holland, Ron van der A, who will be on-site to help us cut the ribbon to the new habitat as well as speaking to visitors about the conservation’s work.

At our information stands, we’ll be encouraging visitors to sign up to our Zooperheroes walk fundraiser, which is raising funds for conservation projects – including PDC, with a discounted entry fee if you sign up on-site this week.

Plus, there’ll be sales of wire snare art to help raise additional funds.

We hope you’ll join us!

Our new Linnes two-toed sloth baby looks to be very keen to wean!

Baby sloths are typically nursed for around six months, but despite our newest addition being just five-weeks-old, it is already extremely eager to try mum’s crunchy vegetables for itself!

We’re still not sure of the baby’s s*x, so it hasn’t got a name yet, but keepers report it is big and very confident already!

Another heatwave means cooling ice lollies are back on the menu for many of our species across the 40-acre site this week.

Watch some of our smaller primates enjoy their refreshing, fruity ice pops!
