❄️ H O W C O L D I S T O O C O L D F O R D O G S ? ❄️

Below freezing temperatures like we’re currently experiencing and that are forecast next week lead us to question “How cold is too cold for dogs?”

As a general rule of thumb:
▪️ at 7°C (45°F) and below, most dogs should be fine, unless certain factors cause them to feel the cold more
▪️ at 4°C (40°F) and below, most dogs will dogs will start to become uncomfortable
▪️ at 0°C (32°F) and below, small, thin-coated, young, old and sick dogs should not be outside for long
▪️ at -6°C (20°F) and below, dogs become vulnerable to hypothermia and frostbite

There’s no one answer to the question – how cold is too cold for dogs. Rather, different dogs tolerate cold temperatures differently.

Some dogs love snow and cold weather, while others get cold very easily and can not stay outside in the cold for very long.

In general, a dog’s ability to withstand the cold depends on factors like their:
Breed
Size
Body fat
Fur
Age
Overall health and medical conditions

If you’re taking your dog out in this weather, keep the walks short, pop a coat on your dog to help keep in some heat, consider using a paw balm to protect pads and remember to clean paws after your walk if you're walking on pavements and streets - the rock salt in road grit can damage paw pads and if dogs lick them post walk, this could be poisonous to your dog ☠️

Whilst we have such freezing temperatures, at Tails 'n' Trails Dronfield, doggies are walked away from streets and pavements, warm coats are worn, walks are shortened, and the underfloor heating back at home is cranked up 🥵😆
