VACCINATIONS UPDATE - LEPTOSPIROSIS

You may have noticed if you’ve recently taken your dog for the annual vaccinations that the Lepto 2 (L2) vaccine is changing to Lepto 4 (L4). Some veterinary practices switched to Lepto 4 (L4) some years ago but others have not. However, the Lepto 2 (L2) vaccine is now being phased out in the UK and is expected to be discontinued in April 2025.

WHY?
Until recently there have only been 2 strains/families of Leptospirosa bacteria causing the majority of diseases in dogs which the L2 vaccine protected against. However, Lepto is a developing disease and there are now 4 known strains of the bacteria which are common in the UK, hence the new L4 vaccine, which protects against all 4 strains.

This means that at your next visit to the vets for annual vaccinations, your dog may need to be given 2 vaccinations, 4 weeks apart, the second vaccination as a one off top up injection.
