Permapigs Small, hobby herd of rex, Californian and pet guinea pigs. Promoting the highest standards of animal welfare. They are so helpful in growing their own veg!

We keep our sows in a free ranging family herd and our boars always have company too. We keep our pigs as naturally as possible, based on permaculture principles. We are establishing a line of rex and funky, Californian pets. We also have crested and roans.

Guinea pig tails!

You might notice that guinea pigs do not have external tails. 👀 Many generations back tailed guinea pigs would have existed, but the tail served no purpose to this species or may have even been a disadvantage.

So, evolution has caused them to cease to exist.😮 However, skeletally guinea pigs do still have tails. They have seven caudal vertebrae that extend beyond their pelvis. These are their vestigial tail - as shown in the x-ray below.😎
