❌️ GRASS SEEDS & YOUR DOG ❌️
Grass seeds (awns) look harmless but have sharp, barbed tips that act like tiny arrows. Once trapped in fur they can burrow into skin, paws, ears, eyes or nose and keep travelling deeper.
COMMON ENTRY POINTS:
PAWS 🐾
- Between toes & pads
- Most common site
- Causes limping & licking
EARS 👂
- Hairy ear canals
- Head shaking & scratching
- Can reach eardrum
EYES 👀
- Under eyelids
- Redness, squinting
- Risk of corneal damage
NOSE / MOUTH 👃👄
- Nasal passages
- Sneezing, discharge
- May reach lungs
WHY THEY ARE DANGEROUS:
❌️ Barbed tips only move FORWARD — they cannot work their way out.
❌ ️Once under the skin they can migrate through tissue, carrying bacteria and forming abscesses.
In rare cases they reach vital organs (lungs, heart, spinal cord) and can be life-threatening.
❌ S️ymptoms may be subtle until the problem becomes serious.
WATCH FOR THESE SIGNS:
• Sudden limping or licking one paw
• Sneezing, nasal discharge or rubbing face
• Persistent head shaking or ear scratching
• Swelling, lump or abscess on body
• Red, watery or squinted eyes
• Lethargy, fever or unexplained pain
PROTECT YOUR DOG — PREVENTION TIPS:
❌️ CHECK AFTER WALKS
Inspect paws, ears, eyes, armpits & groin every time you return from long grass.
❌ ️KEEP FUR TRIMMED
Especially between toes, around ears and feathering. Regular professional grooming helps.
❌️ AVOID HIGH-RISK AREAS
Steer clear of long, seeding grasses in summer & early autumn when seeds are ripe.
❌️ ACT FAST
If you suspect a seed, see a vet promptly. Do not try to dig deep ones out yourself.
