This is Winston, he was our very first visitor when we opened the shop, he’s a magnificent Rottweiler and been fed by us since he was an 8 week old puppy, him and his dad have just been out for a walk and Winston decided he wanted to come visit me, well… not really me, the doggie sweeties we sell, his dad has zero say in this lol. But Winston is a happy boy as he scored three big beef lite treats…. šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚
How do you say no that that gorgeous face?

How late is too late?

We were pleased to spot a still of Rollage ny Twoaie (taken we think in the late 1980’s - about thirty years before we took it on) in a slide show put together in 1991 by Mike Goldie (co-author of the book, Tholtans of the Manx Crofter, published in 1996).

This collection of photographs taken between 1965 and 1991 and accompanied comments by Mike Goldie himself has recently been made into a film by Culture Vannin. It captures so many buildings and their stories, slowly disintegrating, many are no longer around or have deteriorated beyond recognition.

And it made us think.

Rollage ny Twoaie isn’t a Quarterland Farm, it isn’t of any architectural note, it doesn’t have any particular aesthetic value, this little group of buildings isn’t of any historical significance.

Similar to many other small homesteads, it was built in close proximity to an outcrop of easy to quarry poor quality slate which, along with field stone it was then built from and it was lived in by a series of families who grasped a thin living through subsistence farming. However, these buildings are part of what would once have been hundreds, possibly thousands of small crofts, built for practicality and for people eking out a living in the rural parts of the Isle of Man.

What is concerning is that these examples of plain unassuming Manx vernacular architecture that make up our landscape are vanishing in large numbers.

When I look back to the small hamlet outside Douglas where I was born and brought up, there have been five farmhouses lost in my lifetime. This is in one very small area and I’m sure many reading this post could make long lists of others. These were farmhouses that were quiet, architecturally inconsequential, of not enough merit to save them from ā€˜progress.’ Ones that haven’t been demolished have been hugely extended and are barely recognisable in their original form.

There is little written historically about Manx vernacular architecture, there are some noted regional variations and some standardisations and yet we all on the Isle of Man know of and are familiar with those whitewashed cottages with squat porches that are dotted round the landscape. As part of a once huge collective, they make our landscape the environment we all love and there are fewer and fewer as the years go by.

Once they’re gone, they’re gone - as the saying goes.

Over the past four and a half years, we have become aware that our work on Rollage ny Twoaie has raised questions about what is actually salvageable.

Many would have knocked our farmhouse down at least (and have told us this) with its collapsed gables, shallow foundations and undulating walls - How far gone is too far gone? When it’s easier to replace an old building in a state of dereliction with a nice new one, where is the incentive to keep the old with its unique proportions? Not everything is salvageable but should we be thinking harder about what we write off? Sentimentality versus practicality perhaps, with no encouragement to save these buildings what will the island look like in the future if it continues on the same trajectory as it is on now?

Just one example we have found is that Building Control application fees are far higher for a renovation than for a new build. There is absolutely no encouragement whatsoever to save these buildings and generally, it is much cheaper and easier to knock them down and start from scratch.

How valuable is the preservation of our built environment and where do you draw the line?

Well, aren’t they the questions.

Thanks Mike Goldie (and Culture Vannin) for reminding us of what we have already lost and what there is left to save. I had posted this two years ago but the points are still valid today.
