In the run up to the Easter weekend we thought it’s only fit to remind everyone what’s okay for our four legged friends to eat 🤪

🍫 As everyone is aware chocolate is toxic to dogs & it actually depends on the quantity of theobromine they consume as to whether or not we need to see them

🍇 Hot cross buns, raisins, sultana’s & grapes are also something that dogs shouldn’t eat & could cause long lasting effects if left untreated

🌸 Cats in particular, should be watched when there are any daffodils or Lily’s in the house as they are highly toxic to cats. Even if they get the pollen on their fur or paws & ingest it, it can cause serious damage

🐓 We all like to treat our companions every now & again, but if you’re feeding them any trimmings off your Sunday roast, please be careful as to how much fat or salt they have in them. It can lead to vomiting or diahorrea, and in some cases pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas)

If you have any worries or concerns about your pet & what they’ve eaten, then give us a ring for advice ☎️ It might be a long bank holiday weekend, but we’re still open 24/7 for emergencies 💥

Loosing a pet is a difficult and emotional time for the whole family. Not only have you lost a pet you’ve lost a companion and a significant part of your day to day life.

We want all of our clients to know that we are here to assist and support you in any way we can. We are always here and more than willing to listen and talk. ❤️‍🩹

Explaining this loss to a child can be difficult, to help we have some bereavement materials available for children of all ages. There are booklets available containing diagrams, poems and stories. There is even space for them to draw their fur friend and write down some of their favourite things about them. These booklets are be dotted around reception, if you can’t find one and would like one please ask our receptionists and we can help get you one🌈🐾🤍

Is no new thing that chocolate is toxic to dogs & cats, however “No pet should go to heaven without tasting chocolate”, we couldn’t agree more 🍫

We have some jars in our consultation rooms containing chocolates. These are available to anyone who wishes to give their pet a chocolate whilst they are spending their final moments together.

No pet should go to heaven without a kiss. ❤️🪽

Lenny came into see us before Christmas for his castration. However, both of his testicles were actually undescended & inguinal (in his groin) 🤔

Advice on the timings of castrating dogs has changed hugely over the years as we’re much more aware of the behavioural & the developmental effects early neutering can have. One piece of advice that had remained the same is that if your dog has an undescended testicle (either in the groin or abdomen) it should be removed ✂️ This is because the body temperature in the abdomen or groin is different to that in the sc***um, which can mean overtime the testicle grows & could even turn malignant 🌡️

Lenny has since recovered super well from his surgery & is back to being a crazy springer 🤪

Patient of the month, is Solo 🌟🌻

Solo came into us for some dental work this month as his mum noticed his breath was a little smelly 🤧 He is an incredibly nervous rescue soul so it was decided a general anaesthetic to clean his teeth & have a look would be less stressful for everyone involved 🥰

He required both his upper canines to be extracted due to severe periodontal disease. We cleaned up the rest of his teeth & he has bounced back since his surgery 😌

Solo has been incredibly brave during this whole process, taking everything in his stride 🤩

Our penultimate post of the dental series for dental health awareness month, is how to help keep your pets teeth clean ✨🦷

If dental disease is advanced then it will be incredibly difficult for you to clean their teeth, so more often than not, a scale & polish is recommended. This is done under general anaesthesia because unlike humans, we can’t explain to your pets why they need to keep their mouths open & not bite us 😂

Ways to help prevent or slow down dental disease include:

🪥 Toothbrushing - with special enzymatic toothpastes designed for dogs and cats
😺 Mouthwash - can be added to their water to help reduce the amount of food sticking to the teeth
🥣 Dental supplements - such as plaque off can be added to food, the seaweed extract has been proven to help mobilise tartar & plaque build up on teeth
🦴 Dental chews or diets - can also help reduce tartar build up

On Tuesday 4th March, Dr Gary Campbell will be hosting a Zoom at 1900 to discuss all things dental 😁
