Temperatures are set to soar this weekend & whilst most of us will bask in the sunshine, we must remember dogs are at a much higher risk of heat stroke for temperatures over 25 degrees C 🥵🔥

What most people don’t realise is even at temperatures of 20 degrees C or above, some breed of dog, dogs with existing health issues or those suffering with obesity, can still get heatstroke ☀️

Our top tips for your dogs in this heat wave:

🔥 Don’t walk your dog between 8am - 8pm, no dog has ever died from missing a walk, so a few days off won’t hurt them
🔥 Keep your dogs in the shade during the day, try to discourage from excessive sunbathing
🔥 Make sure there’s plenty of fresh water available for them at all times
🔥 If you suspect your dog has heat stroke the most important thing to do is cool FIRST and transport SECOND

Remove your pet from the heat, you can use cold water immersion on young dogs & if that isn’t possible pouring cool water over your dog is a safe & effective way to help bring their core body temperature down 💦 Don’t use ice cold water as it can cause shock & also don’t cover your dog in wet or damp towels. Their body temperature will warm up the towel, trapping the hot air between them & the towel, giving it no escape route, instead just making them hotter 🌶️

In the UK it’s estimated 30% of the cat population (which stands at an approx 2.5 million) and 15.8% of dogs (with an estimated 2.1 million owned dogs) are considered geriatric 🥹

Looking after our seniors does mean we have to do a lot differently & make various adaptations for them.

A week ago today, part of our team were meant to complete the South Coast Mighty Hike but due to weather warnings it was cancelled. Never fear though, The House Vet took this as an opportunity to do their own hike through the Surrey Hills 🚶🗻

They walked an impressive 13.5miles in just over 5 hours - which is half a mile OVER what the original walk was meant to be 💥

We had a goal to raise £2000 for MacMillan but absolutely smashed the target by raising a huge £2595 🥳🎊

Thank you to everyone who donated & showed support, we’re proud to be supporting MacMillan & showing our support to those affected by cancer 💚

A huge congratulations to you all & a special thank you to Helen, our evening receptionist, & her husband Tim, for hosting lunch & bubbles afterwards 🥂🍴

Lenny is a star patient (particularly when every splint change involves 3 lick-e-lix 🤣🤤)

Poor Lenny was involved in a suspected road traffic collision, although his leg is broken, he got away with minor injuries 😢

The decision was made to splint Lenny’s leg & try to help it heal conservatively. We’re making sure his visits are as stress free as possible with plenty of lick-e-lix & cuddles 🥰

We even added some artwork to his bandage for his tiny humans! 🎨

Introducing Emma F 👋🏼

Emma joined the team back in January & is officially our assistant practice manager 😎 She does lots of behind the scenes admin, dealing with queries, helping reception & the nursing team out.

Anaphylaxis is serious, but particularly in our brachycephalic breeds. Poor Jasper here was rushed down to us, initially he just had puffy eyes but it quickly progressed to full blown facial swelling, body wide hives & partial airway obstruction 😳😱

His Dad acted quickly & rang us, so he received treatment as quickly as possible. Jasper received some intravenous medications & oxygen whilst the swelling came down 😮‍💨 Not all allergic reactions are this severe but if they progress quickly it’s important to see emergency veterinary treatment 🚨

Not even 2 hours later he was able to go home with a short course of oral medications 🥳

Signs of an acute, suddenly allergic reaction can include:

🐝 Known sting or ingestion of something potentially toxic
🐝 Swollen area - eg paw, eye, nose, usually it comes up very suddenly
🐝 Lethargy or drowsiness
🐝 Hives coming up, sometimes in a local area or across their whole body
🐝 Difficulty breathing - particularly if the reaction is around their face or necks

The most important thing to do if you suspect your pet is having an allergic reaction is to stay calm & give us a ring immediately for advice ☎️

There are 2 ways of measuring blood pressure, both are very well tolerated in cats & can be done in a 30 minute consultation ⏰

Stressful events or environments can cause an artificial increase in blood pressure which is why our dedicated cat clinic is so important 🐱 We have Feliway adapters throughout the clinic, a ‘cat only’ waiting area & quieter atmosphere away from the hustle & bustle of the main clinic 😌
