During my work as a nurse I have gained much experience in caring and handling many different animals. A few years ago I spent some months in the Caribbean volunteering at an animal shelter. The memories of dogs and cats I helped out there will stay with me forever as there were many heartbreaking times. Until recently I also helped at local a rescue centre and cared for everything from hedgehogs to guinea pigs, Giant African tortoises to Shire Horses and everything in between. Whilst staying in the Caribbean I rescued two stray pups who I called Reggie and April. They are now 9 years old and finally adjusting to the English winters! We love to explore the local countryside as well as finding new and exciting walks. I would be as dedicated in my treatment and care of your animals as if they were my own. I realise your pets are as much a part of your family as Reggie and April are a part of mine.

With the warmer weather ahead, owners should be mindful of the signs of heatstroke. 🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when a dog gets too hot and is unable to lower its temperature. Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but overweight, young, elderly, flat-faced, giant-breed, and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk, even from just sitting out in hot weather.

Some of the most common triggers for heatstroke include:
🥵 Overheating during exercise - accounts for 74% of cases
☀️ Being outside in hot weather (even just sitting still) - accounts for 12.9% of cases
🚘♨️ Being trapped in a hot car - accounts for 5.2% of cases

See advice from our vets on what you can do to help prevent or provide first aid for heatstroke: http://pdsa.me/hpSh

🧊 Please note that ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs to use as a treat to cool down on a hot day. It is when a dog is suffering from heatstroke that the drastic change in temperature from the ice can cause shock, and therefore should be avoided. A dog’s normal body temperature is around 38.6°C (101.5°F).

WARNING for all dog owners & Dogs carers. Read on....
With the snow and ice expected the roads may well be gritted, if you walk your dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home. Every year hundreds of pets throughout the country become seriously ill and in some cases die because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap. Dogs and cats walk through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws. Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

Too many cats end up unwanted, homeless, and dumped in already full rescue centres. Be a responsible cat owner and get your cat neutered.

As you can see, Reggie is already worried about the next few scary fireworks weeks. (and his outfit!)
Here are some tips to help your pets.

• Provide a den or hiding place where your pet can feel safe.
• Walk your dogs and try to get your cats in whilst it's still light.
• Make sure your doors, windows, curtains and cat flaps are securely closed.
• whilst fireworks are happening try to ignore any fearful behaviour ( panting, shaking, whining etc)
• Try not to leave your pets alone whilst fireworks are occurring as they will feel more relaxed being with a familiar person.
• There are many non prescription products available online and from your vets to help your pets get through this stressful period.

Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween and bonfire night, please be considerate to animals.
