We are very focused on the long term future of the UK alpaca industry. In order to grow and value add our raw alpaca fibre commercially for entry

on the world market we must increase animal fibre growing capacity and farm efficiency. Our priorities here at Inca Alpaca are breeding healthy and happy alpacas that increase in productivity each generation. We aim to breed alpacas that exhibit correct and heavy frames that are suited to carry the increased fleece weights that we bred into them. The last 8 years have seen productivity rise by 100% with average male fleece weights reaching 4kg with a maximum of 5.5kg per annum. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like to learn more about these amazing animals. We welcome interested people to our farm by appointment to get hands on with alpacas and experience the joys and the financial benefits of owning and farming alpacas. Amazing to see this disease drop away from the alpaca industry due to the amazing work and vigilance of the breeders.

There were no new laboratory-confirmed TB incidents in camelids in the whole year of 2024!
Members please share this good news as we should all be proud of achieving this status.

Defra have just updated the bTB figures to include all the results from 2024.
In 2024 there were 343 camelid herds subject to bTB tests.  This includes all reasons for testing, including voluntary sales or export, as well as contiguous testing.

This is backed up by a nil return for infected camelids identified at post-mortem examination.  There has been a downward trend in cases in camelids since 2019.
This lack of bTB in alpacas is a credit to all members who apply sensible biosecurity to their herd.
You can find the full data set here.

Data on TB in Non-Bovine Species - GOV.UK

This week a delegation representing the Camelid industry met with the Defra and APHA team who look after bTB policy and delivery.   There were five BAS members present alongside a Llama Society rep and a vet.  The main subjects discussed were the bTB flow chart that explains what bTB tests and actions are needed in different scenarios.  Recent experiences in the field have highlighted some areas that could be improved.
The guidance will be revised and re-issued in the near future.

Last two days to get your block bookings in for the show event of the autumn.
Everyone welcome, especially catering for new owners.

Can’t decide who to enter?
You don’t have to ! Just reserve the number of spaces you want by Sunday night, and pick the team later 👍

Dorset County Show is going to be an even better event this year with both the Halter Show and the Fleece Show being judged over the show weekend.

The public reception last year was fantastic so if you’d like to learn about your alpacas, spend a fun weekend with your alpaca friends old and new and also promote your herd and your business - come and join in !!

A special shout out for any local breeders who might never have entered a fleece show before - why not take the plunge - enter one or more of your own and come along and see the fleeces being judged - it’s a fabulous way to get an appraisal of your fleece and learn from so many others.

Halter Show places are open until midnight on Sunday 13th July
Fleece Show entries are open until 10th August

We’d love to see you there !

British Alpaca Society National Show 2025

A few weeks have passed since the show weekend and a lot has happened since. We have sheared the 350 strong herd and we expect the new batch of crias to start arriving any day now.

It was an experience to be at the new venue and we thank the organisers and stewards for their efforts. The Saturday dinner was first class and a lot of fun.

Thank you to our team (Leah and Jasmine) at the farm who prepared the alpacas brilliantly and those that led them so well and worked hard all weekend and to our friends who won prizes in what was a very competatve show in very trying environmental conditions.

Here is a selection of our alpacas and their prizes. We hope you enjoy exploring them

I always wondered what it would be like to be an action figure! Cheers Dave 🤣👍🏻
